  1. My mums whippet has always been a funny sod, standing some long distance away when out with my dad. I thought it would never do the same with me.......it did. I think it remains some dogs are just not fully right upstairs,,,,,, not always a case of bonding..........this dog can be fine one minute then the next you've no chance of getting it back for some hours......God knows what the trigger is. It's better with females.

  2. Very old fella I know who's been a serious hunter all his life and seen plenty of lurchers work said one of the dogs that stood out to him as a rabbiting dog was a combination of Irish setter and whippet.

A lady I see every now and again has two english setters, both young and God knows how many generations away from working stock, but by Christ do they cover some ground hunting.

  3. I took a gamble with my first cross springer spaniel x lurcher. I can understand why most people would take a wide birth from such first cross litters when they can go out and get a lurcher x lurcher pup which will end up making more a rounded lurcher....something which I could have done.

You can guarantee they won't be as quick/turn as sharply or catch as much if they chased the same amount of quarry, however that's not everything to everyone.

I just mooch and don't catch much..... I think it's what kept me keen all these years. Anyway I still want a dog that's got a real drive to hunt.....hence why I went for a gundog cross........ Amount of pet gundogs ive seen in the local area grafting their nuts off while out for a walk with joe blogs while my dogs are just walking on the path.

Anyway I think mines about 20-21 inch, is incredibly quick to learn and has that drive to hunt that I was hoping for. I bet she covers twice as much area than my bed/whipxcollie/grey/whip when out. Because I don't have high expectations with regard to chase and catch with her it really does surprise me when she brings something back. Her speciality this season has been squirrels.......bringing quite a few live to hand back....which surprised me. The last few have all been dead saying that and the other day she was standing over one which was still alive.

Although she won't have the catch rate of a lurcher x lurcher I reckon she will probably find more game to chase.

If somebody had the desire they could potentially create some cracking hunting lurchers using gundogs, Im not sure what would be best to use over a first cross though.

    Interesting thread.

  4. Yep that was a bit disappointing. I can see where your coming from.....can be frustrating, I've had one where I had to close my eyes sometimes when he was closing in close to the hedge....luckily never got injured from it.

My retired bitch was a bit like that...gob smackingly sharp one minute then almost....not much I can do about that one...and hold back a bit too soon.

  5. I'd hate to wait that long for it to turn up....4 weeks max...and that would seem like a life time. Saying that I've seen some catapults out there that I would be prepared to patiently wait for......., but let's face it it only takes minutes for somebody to email you out of curtesy to apologise for the delay......and maybe include a free set of bands.

  6. No expert on catapults and have just received my first bottle of Tru oil which I am going to try.

However I have oiled my kitchen bar with a couple of different oils both which are very good. The first was Liberon finishing oil, very good oil and you can achieve a very high gloss finish....more mirror like than varnishes I've seen....took a bit of practice but worth it if you like that sort of finish.

This time I decided after reading many reviews to use Osmo TopOil 3058....clear. This is made in Germany, but can be bought all over. It's an oil wax combination, the clear one gives a more natural matt finish, but still has a nice sheen to it.....very nice.

    Both good oils.

  7. My first dog was a whippet...by Christ he was a firey thing and a lot more weather resistant than my little sandy lurcher. Be interesting to see how he compares to the little lurcher. How many dogs you got...4?

  8.

Nice little team and your pup hunts at a nice pace.......not too fast. My favourite type of hunting by far.

In that vid she went at a nice steady pace. But more often than not she goes a lot faster, and if you don't keep a very close eye on her she's in the next county. I'm hoping she'll calm down as she gets older but at the moment I have to concentrate on her the whole time.

Always find that's half the the battle with young bushing dogs, the other half been recall which yours seems pretty good at.

It,s each to their own, for what i do, which is ferreting, mooching, and lamping, and nowadays it,s more lamping, i like a dog which uses its brain, has plenty of stamina, and can take a knock, the collie greyhound of the type i keep ticks all the boxes, the numbers game means nothing to me, been there and done that when i was alot younger, you can only kill stuff once. regards collie john.

WHAT WUD YOU CALL BIG NUMBERS , WITH THIS X,,WHEN YOU WAS FULL ON,,

I was helping out on a rabbit clearance job, totally different to how i normally work my dogs, i work my dogs for pleasure, big bags especially on the lamp mean nothing to me my and my hunting companions like seeing our dogs have a few runs whether they catch or not is irelavent, we dont bother with big bags of rabbits, like iv,e already said you can only kill stuff once, i,d sooner go out half a dozen times and catch a few, than go out once and clear the place of stuff, when we were on The Big Rabbit Job, we were taking 20 plus rabbits a night with each dog, don,t forget the land we were working our dogs on wasn,t for the faint hearted, it wouldn,t suit the point and slip types of dog, they wouldn,t of lasted two minutes, before they would of been badly injured or killed, my types suited the enviroment on which they were worked on. regards collie john.

I can understand where your coming from, I get my enjoyment from watching my dogs hunt and if I catch anything......which is a rare occurrence.....it's just a bonus......and more of a challenge..which keeps me keen.
