I'm heading in to my dealer on saturday to pick up some 30gr BT Hornady WMR rounds for £23/100. He tried to get the offerings from CCI, Remingtion, Federal and maybe one other but all were either not availbe, the company couldn't sort their life out, or too expensive. So will report on these Hornadys

do you really want 44-40? If not try other more popular calibres like 30-30 or 357mag amongst others. 30-30 is a proper rifle cartridge and the only one that will give regular rifle range. Browning BLRs come in most common centrefire calibres too, but the IMO proper lever actions don't. That's Winchester '94 and various Marlin models. But on the 44-40 front, I think in this country you have to reload, and maybe even cast your own bullets

difficult to find yes - but it means you can fire LR power rounds in a 22mag gun. So less noise and meat damage making it a very useful all round gun

Hi harrygrey382,are the lower power WRF/DYNAPOINTS subsonic if so that would make the WMR a very versatile gun, any feedback on the accuracy of this ammo?.Rgds Gerald. Hi Gerald, no these loads are not subsonic - yes that would make it one hell of a gun! The WMR dynapoints are more powerful still than high end LR rounds, the WRF are about on a par. From winchester: WRF f/s ft-lb Muzzle 1300 169 100y 1023 105 WMR Dynapoint Muzzle 1550 240 100y 1147 131 LR HP 37g Muzzle 1280 135 100y 1015 85 WMR JHP 40g Muzzle 1910 324 100y

does it say how long this mentoring has to last - or is it indefinte/until you apply for a change?

What a mess, how ridiculus - why is ammo variation so hard to get in this country! I'll be calling my dealer on the subjetc tomorrow, haven't heard anything yet. So, question is, could we get enough members interested to order 2000 rounds? I'd be in for starters...

I am certainly not the most experienced member os this site, but seeing as no one else has replied I'll give it a shot. Firstly, there's no harm in trying. Maybe give your FEO a call before sending the form in to save a wasted £25. Sounds like you have a good chance assuming your department is reasonable though. The best way would be to find a mentor to go out with you a few times and vouch for you. Should be easier seeing as you have the permission for it. Good luck and hopefully somoneone more experienced can chim in

To load or not too load!?
harrygrey382 replied to Grousekeeper84's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
As with life, there is good and bad with reloading. I have never purchased a factory round since owning centerfire rifles, although I have been given factory fodder. Obviously you have the set up costs, £200 will buy you a whole lot of factory fodder. How many rounds do you shoot and how long will you stick with the .243" Lets look at the costs. Powder £35 ( 140 rounds @ 50 grains) / £28 for 100 bullet tips / £5 primers / new brass £20. So that's (per round), 25p + 28p + 5p + 20p (new brass) = 78p per round or £15.60p for 20. If your reusing the brass obviously that's £11.60p p -
FAC upgrade advice - 243
harrygrey382 replied to harrygrey382's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
thanks logic, i think all i need to do now is pluck up the courage to ask a farmer, or two... I do see a fair few roe about so they may be a problem round here. I guess i could even offer a small amount for a successful stalk, but this wouldn't be very satisfactory. -

At the moment I've got a 22WMR with a space for a 22LR. I shoot at work (I look after horses and grounds amongts other things), mainly for myself but they get to lose a few vermin along the way. It's s 30 acre patch, and my FEO said I'd need to get more experience and/or more land permission to get centrefire. This is the lower end of Norfolk btw. I'm 25 and always been a country boy So 3 months in (ish) I'm getting the bigger-calibre bug. I'm seeing a lot of muntjac and a roe gave me a bit of a shock today. So I've got a couple of questions to put to the (many) experts: 1) Permission.

I was after some of this, but the dealer that sells winchester is having problems getting ammo in. Also, it's not listed in the winchester catalogue (hard copy) so they thought it wasn't availabe. I'll get onto them again maybe - I'd like to compare it with the CCI offering

There are so many things in life that are pointless I think that comment is certainly one of them. But to answer your question, how about fun? Or interest? To the OP - I've read that a few times, but it never ceases to amaze me. Man I would love to watch something like that, at even half that rate of fire from a bolter. I guess the barrel must have been pretty warm, but abviously it didn't effect accuracy THAT much I seem to recall some pretty quick bolt work at Bisly quite a while ago. The shooter never let go of the bolt with his thumb and forefinger, while pulling the trigger with h

Mark - Can you fit a mod with a tubular magazine? Just out of interest? Ta, Ric depends on the gun - in theory yes. I've seen them on Marlin 39As and there's an Ithica 79 (basically a Henry) on guntrader now with one. But a mod wouldn't fit on my Winchester 9422M because the end of the barrel is too close to the end of the magazine, and they're spaced so tightly you'd have to remove the mod to refill the mag on this design.

Yeah this is what I hear. Thing is this dealer said they should be in real quick, wouldn't have thought he'd lead me on... Hope not anyway. Will keep pestering him That's what I thought/ reckon it should be. But they said for them 22RF means LR, even though they're all rim fire. I'd like a hornet, but I notice on guntrader they're not common, and very expensive. Don't have a centrefire on my permission, but plan on asking one of the many local farmers. Does anyone know of a farmer in norfolk wanting some vermin control?
-
aren't you forgetting lever actions? Very american I know - but if you get a good one accuracy is plenty good enough for 100+ yard rabbiting. Rate of fire is plenty quicker than a bolter, maybe not up to a frantic bit of semi auto trigger pulling, but aimed shots I'd say it'd rival the semi...
-
Yeah that's what I though - they're all rimfire. But on the phone they said 22RF means 22LR in their eyes. All ok though got the paper back today and it says WMR. Yep they're the cci 0073 - not in yet I called today. He said they should've been in ages ago and doesn't know why they're taking so long. I'll keep pestering... Not like the rabbits keep going after a super-x hits them, but...
-
Yep sure is, I'm not very happy about it. Especially if it lands me without a ticket for a while. Or even worse if he changes his mind on the magnum front. Can't see why but shit happens
-
I'll let you know when I get them. Over the phone that dealer said £21/100 IIRC. Will have to wait now though due to a misundstanding with the cops - the FO said I could have a magnum, but when my ticket came it only had 22RF. When I went to pick the magnum up the dealer said I know this is technically 22RF, but it should say 22WMR. I said call the FO, he said I believe you. So now when they get my bill of sale they say my ticket needs altering... Basically I need to wait for the ammended version to get back so I can pick the ammo up!

I've got a WMR, mainly for rabbits (headshots unless you don't want the body). Hit them and they're dead... I also plan on taking a fox if the need arrises. I'm paying £17 per hundred for Winchester super-X (40 grain) so looks a bit cheaper than HMR. I've just ordered some CCI Vmax +V 30 grains though - they say these are generally more accurite and pack the biggest WMR punch. Also consider if you can get some 22WRF or Winchester WMR Dynapoints these have the power of 22LR so can in effect giving the a very versatile gun. High power for long range rabbits or foxes and low power for mid/shor
