  1. i got laughed at when i bought my collie mate but he has been the best dog i have owned so far. so quick to learn and will do anything i ask of him from marking rabbit holes and chasing down the odd bunny that slips the net, lamping rabbits at night and he also flushes and retrieves to the gun. he is not perhaps as good at each job as a breed meant for the job would be (ie a terrier, lurcher or recognised gundog) but he is more than good enough. i have been surprised by him so many times over the last 5 years as have the people i hunt with. like i say, not perfect but a very good dog. however
  2. thanks guys. like i say just weighing up options. need a good all round dog and one that is easy to work with if that makes sense.
  3. hi all i am looking at buying a gundog in the next year or so and am weighing up my options. i have found a wealth of info regarding labradors and spaniels but im also looking at other possibilities ie a weimeraner. i was wondering if anybody could give me some info on this breed eg what they are like as a working dog, how easy they are to train and what problems i am likely to encounter. any help would be greately appreciated. atb andy
  4. really mate its down to the individual ferret. i have worked both hobs and jills and have very good results with both. both have different advatages, for example a hob is bigger and is less likely to be kicked about but if a rabbit gets "dead ended", the jill can get round him easier to bout him. also i find that if the jill lies up, dropping the hob in will knock her off the rabbit and both will come out, it saves on digging.
  5. not sure if its right or not mate but i got relatives in the states and they have told me on several occasions that it is illegal to hunt with ferrets in the US. (it is illegal even to own them in alaska). as for anything along the lines of foxes or mink, get a dog, ferrets are not big or powerful enough to handle themselves against such animals and will not last 5 minutes
  6. firstly mate dog food is a major no go. it does not contain a lot of the nutrients they require and you will end up with poor ferrets. you either want to feed them fresh rabbit or a dry ferret food available from most pet shops. if you cannot get hold of proper ferret food then a good quality kitten (not cat) food is good enough. as for how often to feed them, just make sure there is always food available. atb andy
  7. to be honest i would let him keep the pups. he is asking too much money. sounds to me like a bloke who doesnt give a rats arse about his dogs, he just wants money. however i do wish him luck trying to con other people into paying 350 - 400 for a dog. i cannot see these pups going to proper working homes cos i dont know a single dog man who would part with this kind of money, you can get a lot of dog for 400 quid. a mate of mine bought a beddlington greyhound not so long ago, cost him 50 quid from a proper dog man not out to make a fast buck and the pup is already turning out really well. good
  8. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha rofl
  9. they can be a useful bit of kit mate but not essential. if your ferret does lay up and none of the above suggestions work, put another ferret in and they will knock the first one off the rabbit. the second ferret should not lay up
  10. got to admit im on there too. andy twyford. profile pic is my corvette
  11. it could be over active or blocked scent glands mate. i think thats pretty common. sometimes it can be treated, if not the glands will need to be removed. this is not harmful to the ferret but you will notice it will smell a lot less than the others
  12. thanks for the kind words guys. hope they work out well for you. only got 2 left now so if anyone wants them give me a shout. they really are a craking litter!
  13. hi all still got a few kits, they are now around 15 weeks and are getting very big so need to go. for this reason i have decided they can go free to working homes. they are good strong healthy kits from very good working lines. i have both parents so they can be viewed. located in shrewsbury shrops. any questions call me on 07903 320363 cheers andy
  14. just a moult mate. oneof my jills went from just off white to almost a mustard colour after er first moult and another went from light to almost polecat in colour
  15. its just moulting mate, nothing to worry about. if it doesnt sort itself out in a couple of weeks give him some flea treatment as sometimes fleas and mites can cause it
  16. i normally start mine on small holes at about 8 months old mate. i do know people who start them earlier but if they get a bit of a kick off a large buck it can put them off, wait till he is a bit bigger to be on the safe side mate. good luck with him

  21. i have 4 jills, all of whom i breed from. my oldest was in a litter of 3 and she will only ever raise 3 kits (i have had 4 litters from her). my other 3 jills are all her offspring and they too will only raise 3 kits. i dont know if this is common or not but they seem pretty consistent. hope this helps. would be interested to see if anyone else has had similar experiences
