  1. I do agree with most of that post. The ram raiding attitude f*cks it up for local lads who may have been working their dogs in the same area for decades.I've always just worked my dogs local but I can understand why lads drive 150 miles to run their dogs and test them on different ground and most lads who do that are genuine and show a bit of respect.I still think not every ragged deer found is the work of lurchermen. Dunno about the modern life bit though, theres more 4x4 about for sure but look back to the 80s and you'll see practically the same reports about deer poaching (packs of lurchers
  2. Sorry if I didn't make my point very well. I wasn't trying to suggest that all the deer found had been coursed and caught by yorkies lol! Neither that none of what you say goes on. Lots of people keep dogs that can take deer as pets, rescue lurchers ,salukis HPR etc. The owners often don't realise dogs can take deer and get a shock when theirs does. When it gets found its assumed it was deliberately caught by those nasty lurchermen. The terrier comment was about muntjac. When I was a kid (well pre ban I'm afraid) we used to go bushing with our dogs and any others we could borrow and the terrier
  3. This is an interesting thread. It seems everyone just accepts what they read in the papers. Theres no doubt there are idiots leaving game rotting in hedges but I wonder how many of these deer are taken by pet dogs. Some on here may like to think that only the best lurchers take deer and that they are a great test for a dog and that may be true to say if the dog is taking then day after day consistently but its just as hard to take rabbits consistently. The fact is just the same as pet dogs will catch the odd rabbit they also catch the odd deer. Theres been a population explosion of deer in thi
  4. My dogs about 1/4 saluki and he only started being protective after me missus had our baby. He barks at strangers now, people and dogs if they come on our yard
  5. I try to start young ferrets on little 2 to 3 holers. If you don,t have a dog get up there at first light and you've a good chance of actually seeing the rabbits run down the holes that way if the ferret shows you can encourage it back down until it finds. Once you've bolted a couple you'll get more confidence in your ferrets
  6. I see more hares out on the lamp round my way than rabbits. Some go daft in the beam, some run like they do in the day. I don't run them at night now and feel almost superstitious about them but thats just my opinion at the end of the day its up to you and your conscience.
  7. Beautiful looking dogs. A credit to you. They'll look even better doin what they were born to do
  8. Well if you are from the league thought you might like to know I had a lad out lamping with me last season who'd been vegan 16 years. He wanted to see what he'd been holding an opinion on. Next day he skinned and ate the rabbits with me. Hes happy to eat wild caught meat now tho he still won't consider animals bred for the table. One less anti in the world
  9. Two. One lurcher and one big mongrel. Love to get another lurcher but no room cos we live in a trailer with my missus and baby son
  10. My first dogwas this breeding. She only made 21" but was a great little dog on rabbits and caught and retrieved the first hare she ever saw (20 years ago). Good nature and intelligent too.
  11. Hello to you all from Somerset. Don't get to the internet much but enjoy being out with running dogs and reading what you all got to say about it.
