  1. One thing I found is that there are VERY VERY FEW polititions who have got ANY service time. Those who have are mainly ex officers who without the NCO's in the world wouldn't recognise an IED from a cup of tea even if it was served up in two bits of bread. Gordon Brown, his military advisers, and MOD procurement need to be put in a snatch, use the same pi%s poor equipment, the cr%ppy SA80, lousy radios, and made to go out on patrol without the couple of hundred security staff that normally accompany them! Check history and you'll see that NO ONE has ever conquered Afganistan. Bi
  2. Thanks Rolf and 410phil. I didn't want to wreak the traps by doing something stupid so out they go for a weekly dose of Lincolnshire weather before I start to play. As for boiling, the boss still hasn't forgiven me for leaving a large bag of rabbit innards in her kitchen overnight so playing safe, I'll not ask to use the stove!!!! Cheers for the advice.
  3. Now that all the fun of the idiot expert has finished, could someone help me with my new Talpex. The last ones I used were borrowed and as sensitive as hell (got two of my fingers a treat OUCH! LOTS!) The springs seem twice as powerful as the old ones but being new thats not surprising. The new ones set ok but one isn't anyway as light on the trigger and the second fires itself after a few seconds. One seems to have a rounded end to the trigger bar and putting it anywhere near the trigger plate hole and it fires all by itself after a few seconds. ( Megga Ouchness on two if my
  4. Sorry but the boss (wife) won't let me name him! She feels that he won't be troubling us again, EVER AGAIN, and will most likely change where he buys his supplies from as well! and yes, I got the mole (little sod!)
  5. Time & time again you read about experts being sieved for information by novices and that their livelihold is being pinched by chancers. i can understand their frustration but read on and have a laugh. This actually happened and believe me not even a comedy writer could have thought of this one! I'm what could be called a keen amateur. I'll never be a professional moler, never wanted to be, but enjoy trapping moles for fun. Behind us is a farmers field that seems to grow nothing but moles so I get loads of practice keeping my garden nice. Imagine my surprise then when a 'profession
  6. Recently purchased half a dozen of Steve Albano's mole traps. Score so far is 1 mole trapped cleanly & one across the 'waist'. dead easy to set and place and so far(touching wood) no trapped fingers. Not much good in sandy soil where Talpex stills rule supreme. One one tiny point, needed to atach tethers to each trap as they don't come fitted and as the traps are VERY light, they definetely need to be pinned down.
  7. Lovely answers thanks. Having now monitored the runs for a few day, I finally found the main point where moley is coming in. I think the reason why the first couple of Talpex failed was that I hadn't found the main route and thought that as the tunnels were collapsing so fast, that there wasn't a definite regular tunnel system. Probing hadn't worked as the little sucker consistantly entered the site just below the surface so there were no deep tunnels to find. In the end I found his /her regular route by sticking cocktail sticks in the tunnels and watching for any disturbance. Talpex insta
  8. Lots of answers, thanks, but sitting round all day seems to be the bottom line. Still if it's a nice day I'll take a picnic (and me spade). Shotgun pointed at stony ground, NO! Gassing, exhaust fumes, are not in my playbook. I'm an old school trapper who doesn't use poisons or chemicals. Anyway, if gassing was ever to be included, it would rank somewhere between voodoo (never did like the chicken blood) and using a rodenator (which only complete wa*k*rs use).
  9. Ok, the little bug*** has caused me too much time and even after a few helpful hints from others, I still can't get this little sod. The garden in question has REALLY bad soil, a mixture of small stones (it looks like 12mm ballast and pea gravel ) and peaty loose soil. The result is the moles don't burrow deeply but insist on working just under the surface. (I've spent hours probing for non existant deep tunnels and bent two probes as the subsoil is so rubbish.) Digging exposes a fragile tunnel just 1/2" to 1" below the surface which collapses whilst you're looking at it and this is what
  10. Thanks for the replies, thought unset was the best policy but wasn't sure as they were shipped set by the supplier.
  11. Fenn 4 & 6 How do you store yours, set or unset?
  12. Got stopped a while ago coming back from a night shoot. The two 'nice boys' were 'concerned' when we showed them the rifles and load of rabbit we had in the back and the next thing we knew the boys in black arrived all tetrostroned up and arrogant as ever. They flipped when we showed them the long net (which they said was for poaching), and the bucket full of mole traps which they had to ask what they were used for. To cap it all, the spade, dibber and old bayonet (used for cutting turf) brought a sargent on the scene. He must have been 90 years of age, done it all, seen it all, read
  13. Joined a while ago and happily did the accreditiation tests as they really helped me to learn the finer points about moles and traps. By talking about The Guild I've met a couple of professional molers who wouldn't have given me the time of day as an amateur. Funningly enough, once they found out what I'd been doing i.e. learning via the Guild, they have both been teaching me those little tricks that aren't written down! I got given a couple of days out helping on 'professional jobs' on some really sh**y sites that showed me various different traps and their uses. OK I and they know that
  14. Got fed up waiting for Natural England to get back to me in answer to is a mole vermin or a pest. So, found this:- Agriculture Act 1947 (c. 48) Pest and weed control Prevention of damage by pests (1)If it appears to the Minister that it is expedient so to do for the purpose of preventing damage to crops, pasture, animal or human foodstuffs, livestock, trees, hedges, banks or any works on land, he may by notice in writing served on any person having the right so to do require that person to take, within such time as may be specified in the notice, such steps (including such steps
  15. Hello All. This is not a trick, a joke, or me being a smart Alec. I was asked by a potential customer if a mole was vermin or a pest. Confused me as I thought they were the same so, my first reaction was to say that it was vermin BUT, being the cautious type I did some "digging" (if you'll forgive the pun) and found a bit of confusion in it's actual status. Some pest control firms and colleges class it as vermin or list it under pest control. No help there. When I asked Defra they referred me to Natural England. They are thinking about it. (No hurry there then.) Is vermin the same
  16. turned a corner by a greenhouse late at night and saw a man holding a gun looking at me. funny bit was the man went away as I ran. it was my reflection!
  17. Good few yers ago Dog and I got threatened. told police, as usual they did nothing. i went back, told farmer that if he ever touched my dog i'd touch his family. Result, no more threats. I got personal with this wa***r as 'doing it correctly' didn't work. once he cottoned on to the fact i meant what i said, and that i'd got all day and night for payback, he become more "reasonable".
  18. it's a game already! Electronics don't care about carrying a 9lb lump of metal all day!
  19. Put a second safety shot in. Works every time.
  20. Cheers guys for all your replies (nice bit of 2" bending stubby))
  21. Don't know if this has been covered, but I found it reading the National Gamekeepers Association site. It's only an advisory but we all know such things become law behind our backs with no consultation with the people who matter i.e. us. Click here DEFRA Dog Welfare to read the whole thingy. Couple of examples:- How often to feed your dog Your dog must be fed at least once a day, but generally, it is advised to feed your dog twice a day. (mine would eat both meals and sleep the rest of the day and not be terribly keen running round on a full stomach lamping that night) A lon
  22. Just got a letter back from my MP who is watching the e petition, is against the bloody thing in the first place, and has forwarded my letter onto the idiot in charge of licencing the rodenator.
