  1. Hi, I borrowed my mates snipped hob this year but thought my two jills were getting fatter. Turns out one just gave birth to a massive litter of 14 and the other is still pregnant. Has this happened to anyone else. The hob was snipped last year and has been with plenty of other jills and nothing happened.
  2. Hi I just hand stripped my lurcher and thought it would be a good idea to do the ferrets. The fur came out by the hand full and they are now a different colour. Not sure it was a good idea. Anyone else out there do it?
  3. Hi, My 11 month old deerhound cross flushes rabbits and deer fairly regularly. Its fine but no amount of calling will stop him. His recall is good and its only when he is running after something that he becomes deaf. He chased a deer across the road today and only came back after he lost sight of it. I want him to chase but only when I give the command. Any ideas????
  4. Hi, I studied deer at Sparsholt College for three years, ended up with the National Diploma and the National Deer Stalking Certificate. Since then I have worked in Canada for the Fish and Wildlife Department. I'm now in the Army, based next to Bisley and teach the new recruits to shoot. However, when i recently tried to book some stalking, i was told i was not qualified or experienced enough as i did not have the DSC1. I contacted the BDS and all they said was i would have to do one of their courses. Its all a money thing.
  5. Reading my message again, i probably didnt make it clear. I have got my work to pay for the DSC level one which i am doing this month in somerset. I was wondering if anyone stalked at the schemes run by BASC. They have one in Thetford and also on Arran in Scotland. Looking at other forums, they get a lot of bad reports of overshot, no deer etc. Just wondered if anyone had been?
  6. after reading lots of bad reports on the schemes run by BASC in scotland and norfolk, just wondering if anyone has first hand experience of these. Are they worth doing or a waste of time.
  7. Hi Lola Something else came to mind last night while thinking of your problem. What do you feed him? Try to keep his protien levels below 21% if you can. Our two go mental on some types of dry food. We switched to a BARF diet and they settled down. A really good book i found was Understanding the Working Lurcher by Jackie Drakeford. She also writes for the Countrymans Weekly and other mags I believe. Dont give up on him just yet!
  8. He is a lovely looking dog. looks similar to my deerhound cross, but different colour. As someone mentioned, you need to get into the habit of crating him. He needs a place he knows is his own. Start by shutting the crate door for a few minutes at a time and build it up. My two are fine now they are used to it. Before he was destroying all the doors and furniture. Try and find someone in your area with other dogs so he gets extra stimulation on the walks or even join a agility club to focus him if he is not a working a dog. Mine both work and love the agility once a week. If we lived closer to
  9. On recommendation from the vet, i used the cough mixture mentioned and it worked a treat. One bit of advice though, i bought a tick ointment for my ferrets from Pets At Home. It burned through their fur and into their skin. They ended up at the vets after all. The vet mentioned they had once tried to get them to stop sell drugs and treatments but nothing came of it.
  10. Hi, I'm moving to the Plymouth area in the summer from Surrey. Where should I be looking for new deer stalking opportunities? I dont mind travelling and have DSC1 and the old National Stalkers Competency Certificate. Any suggestions?
  11. Hi, I have looked at the messages but does anyone have a snipped hob in the woking, surrey area. I will happily pay for his service. ( for my two jills, not for me !!!)
  12. I am doing it in march. I did the National stalking certificate 10 years ago when i studied deer at college. The DSC replaces it. The main things to study were species recognition at different times of year, breeding seasons, lots on ballistics and calibre choice. Can't remember much more!! You can buy the manuel before you do the course. All they will do is go through it on the course. If you have read it before than you will have a better chance.
  13. Hi mate. I am section commander at the training centre and have several engineer lads in my section. Basic training is now really easy and looking at your phase two training at minley it looks really good. You should enjoy it.
  14. mine is fairly dark but has a white bit on chest.
  15. good to see mine is not alone being a shorty. i was a bit worried about her being too small but if others are working similar size dogs i will give her a go. Nice dogs. ours even look similar.
  16. Just interested at who has the smallest working terrier. I bought a jack russell last year from good working stock but she is only half the size of her parents. She is just 11 inches and really small build. I'm wondering if she will get a bit bashed up if i take her ratting.
  17. we get our meat from either the supermarket (frozen chicken), pet stores sell the tripe or mixed frozen meats like rabbit or beef. Of course you can feed rabbits that you catch. I would watch them the first time you feed the meat. Ours tried to eat the rabbit whole rather than chewing. It was like watching a snake eat a rat!! We had to hold onto the rabbit to encourage him to chew. It took about a week till he got the hang of it. I mix veg into the meat every other day. THings like carrot, swede, cauliflower etc. Just stick it through the blender first. You can make it in bulk and freeze it. Y
  18. As i mentioned, she does not seem in any pain. It only happens at a certain speed of walking. She runs fine on it.
  19. Does anyone else out there have a dog that carries its hind leg? Our JRT holds its rear leg but runs on it fine. She has been to vets but nothing seems to help. I wondering if it is just a trait of some dogs. She is not in pain at all.
  20. I'm thinking someone or their dog has grabbed them. There are loads of foxes here though. I often see them around our bins. Cant really snare them or would end up with someones dog in it.
  21. I'm off to Colorado in a week. The best thing is work is paying for most of it. It is only costing me 200 quid all inclusive !!!!!!!!!
  22. The pegs were still in the ground and the only bits of the cord on it. There was fur around so had a rabbit in it at some point. There are loads of foxes here so that might have something to do with it.
  23. Hi. I'm new to snaring and set 10 out yesterday. Went to look this morning and two had the peg still in the ground with some of the cord still on but looked chewed through. The cord is tough para cord so not sure what is going on. The snare and wire tealer were missing. Is this common or am i setting it wrong. do many rabbits chew there way out ??
  24. I used to use science plan for my terrier and lurcher. When they moved to the adult, they seemed to go off it. We now feed rabbit or chicken. We get the chicken from tesco. The bulk cheap frozen stuff. Its about 3 quid for a big bag. They also get carrot, swede and cauliflower mixed through the blender. As we dont always have the meat available the dry food they prefer is the james wellbeloved.
