  1. Had an early start this morning try to catch charlie coming back home to one of our woods been seen in this area a few times .Got settled and waighted no sign of charlie but plenty to see watched some cock birds wander of into the reed bed lots of bunnys and a hare whent about their businese a nice little roe popped out of the wood .Time was getting on the shepherd was moving about on the quad in the fields below me so decided to give a few calls no fox but a bloody big buzzard came straight into the tree i was under it gave me a quick look over and then it was off.Unloaded the gun got me gear and walked back to the motor never fired a shoot was it a waste of time ? Na not to me it was'nt enjoyed just being out. Theirs plenty of folk housebound who wish they could just get out plus watching wildlife for real is far better than on the telly.

  2. do you know location of theft ie shooting ground, home ,town ,pub or somwhere routinley used targeted theft of gundogs or vehicle theft. In my area if dogs are docked they have to be ID chipped there should be a regester of stolen dog ID no's checked at time of booster injections. It's a bloody shame hope this lad has some luck.

  3. rig inlet side of lift pump to a can of fuel if runs ok then problem is in fuel line to tank or tank itself used to get corrosion problems with jap vehicles where the fuel pipe was on top of tank and the anti rust coating did'nt reach. pipe holed with rust and sucking air.good luck

  4. downloaded snaring in scotland a practitioners guide in it it says that the rabbit snares must have a safety stop set 5 in from eye of snare my snares are all free running and have no stops any diy way of modifiying my snares. sorry if this has been asked before. In addition they say the wire should be 3/4 strands around eye and 6/8 strands around noose. any comments

its a advicery note not law that will come later

on the first page WHO IS THIS LEAFLET FOR in short it reads this guide provides advice on snaring methods which are humane, legal and best practice.

advice not law no act has been stamped on it

jbs as you are in scotland i accept that you know more about this than me but do you agrea that this is a missleading pamphlet as it qoutes the word legal many times even in its last sentence it suggeststhat the guid is for the humane and legal use of snares. Do you know if this will come to the scottish government and when. Is it a forgone conclusion that it will be past or not. .

  7. not hard but you do need to have a timing setting tool. I can loan you one if you live in my area the tool i have covers engine codes 16d/16da/17d.

thanks mate but i live a bit to far away. what do you have to take off to get to it

don't want to sound nasty but if you don't know how to get to the belt and you dont have proper tool then suggest you pay a mobile mechanic to fit belt .the logic to this is first you have to replace belt anyway secound when belt is fitted and you crank engine you will be able to find out what if any damage done by checking compressions on each cyl this will give you a better idea of the cost of the job and if you are lucky a belt fitted may be all that you pay. good luck.

cheers mate i am a mechanical fitter but on factory machinery and boilers . the cars still were it broke down so not had a chance to have a good look . just thought id ask what was involved while i was sitting at the computer

as a fitter you'l work it out plus one more tip take off cam cover make sure cam isn't snapped and check for any valves sticking too much clearance between cam lob and follower.sorry no offence ment with last quote.

  8. this is my moan about c/w as all mags with lots of adds they don't knock any products and are very PC plus dont let readers give any ideas on saving money diy gear and not shop bought so as an old sceptic i think the add people have more influence in these mags and that the hunting content comes secound.Moan over solved the problem and saved money don't get any mags just look into THL site but this site should come with a warning CAN BE OBSESSIVE.

  10. go and get a application form from police station it'll give you info you dont have to supply refferees but you do have to send a photo for a variation as they have to attatch it to you new ticket PS the force i deal with is northumbria but i think they all follow the same guide lines the info leaflet is straight forwerd.reasons for mod = health and safety to protect your hearing, and disturbance of naighbours.

  11. Louis don't keep a record of quantity anything in the bag is a good day I do remember a day in late spring it was dull and damp and i only whent out to give my young spanial a few flushes on bunnys but it was one of those days when the dog bumped out one bunny after another .on the way out we took 6 rabbits and had to leave them on a fence line to collect later as they where getting to heavy to carry .Plus we got another 4 on the way back i ran out of cartridges and the dog almost worked to a standstill and we where only out for an hour and a bit whent home happy that day.

  12. hi all. I have never had a dog but i am now thinking of geting a working gun dog for rough/walkd up shooting. What breed would you all recomend? is self training the better option or getting one pre trained? also would it be a prolem in keeping the dog outside in a purpose built kenal? Any info would be much appriciated.

english springer dog for the job many good books dvd's etc to help with training and there is some very good trainers out there cost of training against diy ?If you go down the diy route take alook at as many books as possible borrow if you can one good auther is joe irvine DO THIS BEFORE YOU BUY A DOG.As for outside kennerling its the best place for a gundog if you keep the puppy outside from day one it will know no other place and will be happy in it's own space. rough shooting is nowt without a dog . Goodluck.

  13. The day was cold, bright and calm with no wind smashing for a ramble but not so good for a rough shoot. But out with the gun and dog and some mates got to be better than work.Started down a wet and marshey gully full of reids and grass tufts bumped out a few bunnys got off a few shots and the dogs had couple of retrieves the noise put up about a dozen mallard off the burn a few hundred yards down the gully we all got down but the ducks flew straight off and away made a mental note next time split up and come from both ends of the gully in the hope that the ducks will fly over one end or the other. We where disapointed not to take a few pheasants from here but i think they legged it when we fired, onto the rape field lined out only five guns and four dogs bloody big field to cover decided to take in the sunny side in the hope any game would be suning themselves the lads an both sides of me had birds flushing but i was having trouble keeping my young ess from pulling out to far ahead i missed a chance of a good bird while working the dog never mind***.Next an open wood leading to a young plantation and white grasses blanked wood into plantation then hunted the dogs through the birds and the bunnys where sitting tight here two hen pheasants got up at the same time and where dropped out in front one was picked but the other was a runner stopped the line and started to look for the pricked bird poor scent dogs working hard for a find then on the fence line a bird hunched down an running i put another shot into it and sent the dog for the retrieve. This plantation produced about a dozen flushes and more game in the bag .The cold weather and icey snow on the ground took its tole on my young dog .We decided to leave the bag here a collect it with the quade later split up and my pal and i would head back to the farm and the others would hunt out a moor and a wood .On the way back the ess stopped in her tracks so i carried her for a while my pal hunted his little ess alonge the burn and put up three ducks bang one duck in the bag champion!Back at the farm took the quad out to collect the game we left out in the field the terrier came with me she ran alongside the bike on the way out to collect but coming back she jumped up on the tank and hitched a lift back terriers aint daft. While waiting for the other lads getting back to the farm we decided to take out our other ess and give the a small hunt arround a small reidey pond we had 20 mins of fast flushes and good retrieves this was a great end to the day The bag at the end of the day was 9 rabbits 10 pheasants 1 hare 1 mallard total 21 . So those jobs where werth doing. SORRY ABOUT THE LENGHT OF THE POST CAN,T GET OUT BORED.

  14. Got out early this morning to go up to the shoot to put out 15 bags of corn into the feeders and 5 bags of sweepings onto the rides and into the burns plenty birds about in the warmer woods and glad to see a lot of mallard resting up on the burns. As i fed the burns the ducks got up and then even before i had finished feeding they where trying to drop back in maybe to do with the snowy conditions + the ponds are frozen over and the ducks settled onto the only open water around here and of course i've been feeding up since august and not shot over it yet anyway looks good for tommorows rough shoot . Plan is to hunt up reeds and along the burns for pheasant and duck AM then do a couple of woods and an area of white grasses and young platation for bunnys partridge and maybe woodcock PM..With the snow on the ground took the oppertunity to look for signs of charly found a couple of tracks noted for later on when next out with the rifle . It started to blow a gale and sleating so put the quad away and headed home for an early bath. Can't do nowt because of the weather stuck inn so posted this .Fingers crossed for a good day to come . :thumbs:PS forgot to say we will be hunting a large field of rape as the farm has given us the ok to do it before they put stock in to feed.more pheasannts and parrtys i hope.
