  1. hah yeh my dad pointed that out earlier, i didnt think about it like that but your probably right just i dont know a lot of other people that like shooting (apart from the beating lads) and ide like to as for the training prices, probably be more of a fu**ing down payment Alex
  2. the info on the training? it had A LOT on the website....... four levels before becoming a qualified stalker.........100% pass rate for some of the written and shooting tests needed......... basically very drawn out and intensive on every aspect of stalking!! thanks i couldn't find that, ill email them only thing is, in the shooting times article he said that you need to be voted in by two members but they didn't do it for him.....just hope their relaxed about it because i don't think i know anyone thats a member cheers for the reply Alex
  3. aah interesting to see the effects of each cal. cheers for that mate Alex
  4. read about it today in shooting times anyway went on to their website: "fraternity amongst sportsmen all over the world. Its aim is the conservation and pursuit in a sportsman like manner of all types of game" they have loads of info about the training involved and what they stand for etc but nothing about how to become a member or how to get involved, the club secretarys email is given but i can't get the link although 4 years is a long time to train for a qualification, having thousands of acres of protected stalking land accross the country as a member along with meetings, exhib
  5. good shooting mate, good stalk over a long shot any day i find free hand trickier because my guns very front heavy. looks like a pretty big entry in the neck, what cal/weight of bullet were you using? Alex
  6. could try asking at your local gun shop aswell or stick something up in the window. i get £20 a day... not forgetting beaters day Alex
  7. i've heard the buttolo roe is pretty good havnt got one myself but it comes with instructions telling you how to mimic different sounds and what effect they should have the british deer society recomends them so i imagine their pretty good also because you don't need to blow into them you could squeeze it from inside your pocket leaving your hands free for shooting. hope this helps Alex

    Barn Owls

haha well all i know is harris hawks
  9. thanks you two. i was thinking of getting one, probably single shot to maximise sound reduction because i only have about 7 acres and i near houses and a golf club think ill go with the 20 now because it'll be quieter and offer me a bigger quarry list havnt tried much of Layvale but i usually stick to Hull for clays and Eley for game Cheers for the advice Alex.
  10. would the hushpower .410 be as quiet as the 20 bore with subsonic cartridges? also im not aware of any subsonic .410 cartridges.. anyone know of any? Alex

    Barn Owls

just wondering what the biggest possible quarry would be that you could fly a Barn Owl at? i.e. would small rabbits be an option? Regards Alex
  13. i went saterday and had one feck of a good day! - shot some crossbows (never done that before) - a dvd on lurchers called 'rogues' - some new seeland trousers - a print of someone lamping then the things that didnt cost - had a look at some nice hawks and got a falconry display - watched all the sighthound races - saw the gundog scurry and picked up some tips from the demonstrations - saw loads of nice lurchers etc being paraded around (i want one) - sheepdog demonstrations (never seen that before) - mounted games were pretty exciting even though Cheshire didnt do too w
  14. 15 and shooting mad!! hoping to get a whippet soon to Alex
  15. Cheers John well you learn something new every day I dont own a .22lr or any other rimfire for that matter but out of interest i think ill be following that one up with my local FAO as you suggest. Regards Alex
  16. as long as the pigeons and crows are not in the trees!! you cant use a rifle the same as an air rifle in that you always have to be sure of the back stop because even a 17HMR will travel miles. if it helps to put it in perspective; a bullet from a standard centrefire rifle at 35 degrees will travel over 4000m. sorry if this is basics to you but i saw room for error as i dont think anyone brought up the point i agree, the maximum distance for shooting a fox with a 17HMR should be 100yds and ideally placed at the head or neck On another note, John through my own inexperience ive
  17. .223 is renowned as THE foxing calibre and is your best bet for charlie if you're hunting rabbits aswell on your new permission a .223 will render the meat unfit for sale unless head shots are taken, bearing that in mind you will probably blow many of the heads off!! a .17HMR is capable of tackling rabbits and foxes. The rabbits heads will left attatched and body shots will be more permissable. It is not the ideal calibre for foxes but as long as the distaces of which the shots are taken are of a hundred metres and under and are placed at the head or neck of the fox it can be very ef
  18. Using your mate's .22 probably counts more than anything, it's field experience! Keep doing that and make sure your FEO knows when he comes out to say Hi sadly i cant because ive just moved up to cheshire and know no one neer by that shoots (my mate with the .22 is back in hertfordshire) but the FAO seems nice enough so he may just take my saftey shooting certificate from west london as enough.. fingers crossed
  19. as for waiting a year - lifes too short ill have to go through the process all the same anyway and as ive just moved and don't know anyone up here the possibility of mentoring might be good think ill join a club then and see if my dad will help me out by getting his ticket done first because as you say it will make matters like storage and acquiring ammunition much easier. sorry i should have been clearer on that point (experience), ive had air rifles and used centre fires and rimmys at west london shooting school which included safety tuition ive also used a mates .22 on rabbit
  20. oops sorry didnt see second post. cheers thats cleared it all up just to get the papers then!
  21. Thanks a lot. just one other question would i be able to buy the ammunition?
  22. Hi im Alex, just joined im a little confused about the regulations regarding FAC's; Im 16 and have had my SGC for about a year now. I got it through my dad because he had the safe and everything already checked out. I'de really like to get my hands on a 17HMR (quad varmint) for the rabbits but i dont know if i can do the same thing as with a SGC i.e. hold a FAC under the age of 18 and have a rifle transfered over as a gift. p.s. my dad doesnt have a FAC so it may be harder help appreciated
