Dont mean to be a stickler in respect of detail but if the insurance is on the correct basis then the loss of the beast itself, together with the loss of income and any furture market value can be insured. Depends on the insurer / broker. Cheers

I hope that this does not cause controversy as other [rifle] posts have done and I welcome the responses of various [humble shooting] peeps who have an experience of deer stalikng but..... I was introduced to stalking in NW Scotland (proper Highlands, 3 hrs north of Inverness) at the age of 13, where stalking was an annual thing, twice yearly for reds stags n hinds at the appropriate times of year. The aim was to fill the freezer with venison to see them through the winter, and so whilst it was / is always regarded as good fun, it was essentially a necessity. So in the 17 years I been

I dont own lurchers so on that front I cant comment, I have labs and springers which I work and I use Buddies Petplan (http://www.buddies.co.uk/) who do exactly what I need. A good insurance company in conjunction with a good vet takes away all the headaches. I've had the usual- a mad springer pup jump off a 40ft ice house, a lab with an infected foot...but the clincher was a springer with chronic renal dysplasia (kidney malfunction) who was generally f*cked - in the end we sent him (RASCAL) up to the vet school in Glasgow for tests where he stayed for a couple of days...would have cost

Right Xmas menu's please - I dont really do pressies, a wee special piece for the wife and treats for the kids, but for me the best bit about Xams, aside from not sitting in an office, is the food. There will be smoked and / or salted fish pate, game terrine with homemade bramble chutney, bronze turkey with a'the trimmings............pudd is my weakness...trifle or xmas pudd or cheeses or all???????????????????? then there's is of course champagne, fine wines and maybe even a cheeky dab at some port, followed by chronic indigestion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Come on, you know you want to

The original post I think. So, you want to know what rifle / optic to buy. The various peeps on here can provide you with a wee bit of direction but at the end of the day you need to make your own mind up and that should / probably be based upon a couple of points. 1 - What you feel most comforatble with, which will be based upon 2 - that which you have used to shoot before (I assume rightly or wrongly) coupled with 3 - the availability / advice from your nearest respected gun dealer. If, at the end of the day you're stuck for a gundealer consider R MacLeod & Sons in Tain, Scotland

The opinion is not the problem, its how its made. IMHO Yes, the assertion that a bigger calibre gives you more room for mistake is a fair one, it generally does. But being told we know nothing doesn't really win friends and influence people And the original point, now somewhat murky in the mists of tangential abuse, was about whether 243 or 6.5, we're saying 243 kills everything and is commonplace and cheap, so does the job. By all means cube everyone is free to their opinion and entitled to it, it's just when jibs and sly comments are put up, it's doing the member who aske

Top man Garry. I just changed my Insurance over to NFU and got the best deal of the lot . it worked out a little more expensive at £342 for me and the wife as the other named driver But my screen excess is only £25 when the other company wanted £100 plus a good few other savings in the deal... Much Apreciated mate Just one other thing if anyone can answer this!! my old Insurance company was a bit snotty and have told us we will need to pay them £25 for all their administration fees! obviousley I have told them to get stuffed but are they within their rights to do this? Jas

Nice work fella.

Excellent reply!!

Gluebeam A .243 is more than enough to take reds. My mate was a gamekeeper on a remote highland estate and reds are what they shot. He had a 0.243 which I learned to shot with and is perfect. You want to look at a second hand rifle, say £350, a decent set of mounts and a good scope. That should see you striaght. Just make sure you're happy with the gun, confident in it and you're own ability. Happy shooting

I need help with Pheasant
CUBE replied to garethstroud's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
The main thing to remember with most game (but not all) is that there is not a great deal of fat on the animals. Generally speaking with game birds I would always recommend cooking them fairly quickly, roasting or pot roasting, as longer cooking tends to dry them out. And dont forget to rest the meat - for game birds about 5 - 10 mins with a dish towel over them. If you have already jointed them I would quickly fry them in oil & butter with some garlic & thyme and plenty of seasoning - again, resting applies. If you need any other help please ask CUBE -
Absolutely fantastic - very jealous!! Happy pints ahead!!

Steer clear of Hunters as they dont last (in my experience) Le Chameau's are too soft and dont offer enough support Muck boots are pretty much you're best bet Best of luck

Right Got absolutely pished on when beating a couple of weeks ago and the goold old barbour (17 yrs old to be precise) is leaking like a sieve. I need a new jacket and have worked out that I can afford either a Swedteam (Granesen) or a Seeland (Thornhill). Does anybody have a preference, as well as any other suggestions. Comments please.

Couldn't agree more. Escape, Return to River Cottage and RC forever were top drawer. Just a bag of pish now. CUBE

Roybo is spot on. My lab used to eat shite all the time. Tried the curry powder thing etc and never had any luck. I then used an elcetric collar and I swear after one or two days she doesnt dare think about it. You can rent them for about £7 a week - check out the adverts at the abck of Shooting Times. Best of luck CUBE

I've got a problem with my black lab (2 yrs old) and ESS (1.5 yrs old) - both dogs drop the the dummies before getting to me. I have tried to get them to hold onto to it without forcing it, holidng it in their mounths whilst rubbing their chest, but they both seem unhappy with holding anything in their mouth. I have tried large dummies, two sizes of Air Kong's and tennis balls. I've also turned my back and move away from them as they approach me, but to no avail. Should I be secenting the dummies??? All comments welcome
