Battery hens are caged hens. Between 6 and 12 hens in a crate too small to move around properly. They're kept indoors and with nothing to distract them they just eat, lay eggs and peck each other. They have to have their beaks clipped to stop them doing too much damage to each other. After about a year they are disposed of. As there's no real meat to speak of, they're usually used for dog food or processed foods. Or if they're really unlucky, KFC or McDonalds! :sick: You can tell if you're eating a battery egg, the yolk is a watery yellow colour, similar to pus, and they have no flavour,

I've got a book called the "Easy wild food guide". It includes seaweeds. They're pretty much all edible and taste great. Sea lettuce, for example, can be rinsed and eaten straight from the rockpool. Just make sure you're somewhere where the sea is clean, not some cess-pool like Redcar!

To qualify as free range each bird requires 2 square feet of space according to some supermarkets. That means in a garden 20x20 you could have 200 birds! Obviously that would be ridiculous, but hey, that's Asda price! In short, almost any garden will have room for some birds, if you get a trio of hens that would be ideal. They'll have plenty of space, companionship and they won't trash the lawn, and you'll have 2-3 eggs a day. Boy, they soon mount up! Get some rescued battery hens if you can find them, or a Rhodie hybrid or Light Sussex. Nick

There are lots of ways to cook them, but to start off, pluck and remove the breast meat. That's about all that's worth using. Crispy fried chilli pigeon. Cut pigeon breast into thin strips. Dip in egg and coat with flour/chilli powder mix. Deep fry in hot oil 'til they float (3-5 mins), drain and cover with sweet chilli sauce. Pigeon pasta. Dice breast and marinate in oil, garlic, pepper and salt. (and anything else you like) Put 2 tins of tomyatoes into a pan with garlic, pepper, tarragon, basil etc. Alloow to reduce to about 1/2-2/3 volume. Brown pigeon breast in a pa

Wow! What whoppers. Some of our Light Sussex are just coming in to lay and have been popping out 100grm+ double yolks too. The oldies in the park homes over the way have been snapping them up! BTW We're looking at getting some hubbard day olds delivered to cornwall next week at 80p each. We are buying collectively with other smallholders. Well, I have a mossy 500 pump due on Friday. It may get a bit of use, so I saw this section and thought I'd ask for some expert advice. Who on here reloads shotty shells? Where is the best place to get the gear? And how much does it cost? Basically, is it worth it for anything less than a 10 bore?

Didn't have the inclination to check to see if this was posted but........... I used to skydive from an airfield near Headcorn in kent. When we were bored waiting for a lift slot to come free we'd go and watch the Lynx family that lived at one end of the airfield. They weren't that big, but still a big cat. They didn't predate upon the surrounding sheep farms and raised 2 litters that I saw. They were Lynx, not bob-cat or similar. They were well known to all the regulars at the airfield and surrounds. Nice looking birds. We have a couple of Cornish Rock that we were hoping to breed from, but they don't seem to be thriving free range and it looks like they may go in the pot very soon. We bought some Hubbard hatching eggs and the chicks are coming on nicely, but we're not totally comfortable with 10-13 week table birds. It'd be interesting to see how your cross breeding goes, keep us informed.

We use electric strand 5" inside a stockfenced pen. This means the pigs can't dig under or push through without getting a belt! Without the strand, there aint nothin' that'd stop 'em if they had a mind to wander. As for the kids, I have 3 girls, and we've all been on the receiving end of the fence. It is a shock, but only that. There are no lasting effects and after a couple of goes you just give it a wide berth. My uncle has persevered without electric for ages, and every fence he has ever built has been destroyed by his sow, Madaleine. But you may be lucky.

We have Light sussex and various reds and crossed reds. They're ok to eat, but take ages to get to size. We also have a pair of cornish rocks which we're hoping to breed for meat. In the mean time, we are buying hatching eggs. We use Poulet Anglais who sell Hubbards eggs for 35p each. They are fast growing, about -100 days, and hardy enough for free ranging. This enables us to be self sufficent for chicken in a relatively small area.

Scotland Ireland and Wales have a definitive identity. You are rightly proud of your herititage, yet if the English dare to show patriotism you all start catterwalling that you're hard done by and under tyrannical rule. I'm actually Cornish, NOT English! I had a play with one around Snetterton last year. Amazing on the track, but not much use around normal roads. Gret fun tho!

My last bike was a 916. Far too complicated for this project. You're right tho', the widowmaker's lump's ace, and lets face it, there are plenty of crashed examples to be had. If it ever happens, I'll let you know.
