  1. Can't see me racing up to have a day out but manners cost f**k all .I treat as I find and if I'm being treated well there is no need to kick off .
  2. Have to say Rob ,you rear some crackers mate and the garden advice spot on .Do you have homes lined up before you breed or think about that after and are you ever left with pups you don't necessarily need .Your a lucky man having time for all that
  3. I work full time ,so does the wife so bitch is with pups but has access to shelf if needed .Even at 5-6 weeks they can't wait to get back to them after walks .For me there is no hurry and they will go to homes when I'm ready not before .Summer hunting holds no allure to me so no rush at any level .The fact I keep litters small is to the benefit of all ,especially the bitch in returning to condition .For me weaning is done at a pace that the bitch and pups are happy with and no set timing .Food is offered at around 3 weeks .Weetabix to start with and watered down cows milk whilst seperated usu
  4. Just say what you got to say Jeemes ,no riddles just say it .
  5. 3 seasons is very good from a pair of boots I would say
  6. I personally won't use antibiotics unless a last resort .IMO ,too many people use it incorrectly too often .In all the years I've had dogs I've probably used them a hand full of times ,once for an abscess I know .Not for this thread but the cleanliness of any treatable wound is paramount as is day to day cleaning routine .I'm not saying scrub out everyday with a cleaning product but washing down combined with clean bedding and a weekly scrub has always stood well for me as well as good grub and excerise. Antibiotics must never be looked on as a preventative ,they are a backup to help animal f
  7. Check the bitch daily from parturition at the back end ,especially if she discharges smelly dark fluid .I've never jabbed before or after birth ,in fact never had a problem with infection Exercise for the bitch ,clean quarters especially getting rid of birthing stains and regular body checks will keep you infection free . Incidentally vet bed has served me well since its invention whatever the weather and I use 2 on rotation having one clean at all times. Mastits is in fact caused by bacteria entering the nipple through dirty conditions or in contact with other medium such as urine .Those
  8. Personally I think the onus is on the pup owner to find out as much about the perspective owner as possible which becomes a chore and nie on impossible when a litter is advertised. There are many ,many lads I know that only breed when enough homes are guaranteed BEFORE the bitch ever sees a dog not the other way around . I have a feeling I am banging my head against a wall but no harm in making people think before breeding .IMO its the coin or rather lack of it that sorts out a litters destiny .
  9. It may well appear strange to some to cull pups but its even stranger to me that people sell pups to complete strangers without a second thought .Someone referred to certain lads being touchy about anyone having their breeding lol,is it any wonder in a world full of messers and pushers that a lad with decent stuff be choosy who they go to .If the time is taken to mate a decent bitch with a decent dog then why is there doubt about any of the litter ,beats me .Far too many terriers bred from unknown stock to supply to those who arnt really fit to own a gerbil .
  10. Yes I do. But only since recent problems with fading puppy or canine herpes. Plenty heat is recommended and it working for me, so to be honest I am kind of cautious to stop for the sake of a few quid. I have noticed pups thrive better under heat so no harm in it. 3 weeks of heat and then they are out of the danger zone. Cheers mate .I may be a dinosaur where pups are concerned but I'm still a firm believer in nature before nurture and believe that if a pup isn't going to make it it will die regardless of heat or not .I will never mate a bitch out of summers months ,preferrably spring and
  11. You have been dealt a rough hand mate .You still in the game now .

  13. Now that's another subject mate and one you'll do time for lol.
  14. that would depend what you call summer, I've had litters in june that have needed them because of wet cold conditions and it would also depend where you are keeping them, common sense really, get yourself a incubator thermometer,it has a digital read out and a remote sensor on the end of a wire that can be placed in the bed with the bitch, I keep mine around 19*C. Corkman, I always used to let nature take its course until finding 3 "dead" pups on my kitchen floor at 6-30am one sat morning and another large bull headed pup half hanging out the bitch, I quickly put the 3 "dead" ones in my dress
  15. The money isn't any issue and being a stones throw away means a stress free visit which money can't buy .
  16. Corkman ,do you use a heat lamp in summer months mate .
  17. If you've tried twice and the bitch has either rejected the pups or damaged them badly, then I wouldn't breed from her again. Some bitches do lose the plot, possibly due to hormonal behaviour gone awry, but unless you can hand rear or foster pups on to a sensible bitch I'd not put myself or the bitch through that again.Good advice Penny .Out of interest ,have you had much success fostering ,something I've never tried but then again I don't ever have 2 litters on the place .
  18. First scan was £48 but no charge for second scan though she said second was half price to start with .
  19. How many times are you mating her.I've found over the years there is a distinct correlation between times mated and pups born but others no doubt disagree .Try mating her once next time for a smaller litter .
  20. Cheers Plucky .I don't agree with all you've wrote but thats your way ,your pups .Decent post though mate .I used to religiously whelp indoors but nowadays complacency has taken over ,in summer months anyway .Plenty of newspaper that is cleared out after parturition .The temperature is something I also worried about but now know its not as big an issue as I thought ,with a small litter anyway .The bitch I refer to in this thread was in a crate in the kitchen and after she fell asleep I went onto bed but she woke me at 4.00 am whining .I let her out for a wee and after that she promptly picked
  21. Should of said if bitch is in labour for up to 90 minutes is cause for concern .Sorry for misleading . Foxbolter , the title is aimed at those who maybe are thinking about it not aimed at internet experts like yourself .Please don't ruin another thread .
  22. I'm not going to preach to anyone who's reared a few but recent events have shown me never to be complacent about it. From the day your bitch is last mated its roughly 63 to 65 days to birthing .The vet will usually scan your bitch from day 40 as this is when the foetus is large enough to show a heart beat .No vets will say for definite how many you have in her but a rough idea is given there and then .This is also the time when vets recommend that you start worming your bitch with panacure .Doses vary and is best discussed with your vet .Keep the bitch active within limits as good muscle hel
