Hi Moley, do you fancy posting a piece on the use of BG traps, I've never had a go with them. cheers, ian. a few piccies Cheers Moley. Is it legal to set them in the fence like that? Nice catch three in a fenn.

well as you know i run about 100 bg,s at a time in certain situations and find that tho they work in burrow mouths they are not as good as fenns , for other situations like under fences , thru cover etc , they are far better that fenns, i wouldn,t waste my time and effort setting them if i didn,t think they worked better , e.cook , you should give them a try , you might just change your mind Hi Moley, do you fancy posting a piece on the use of BG traps, I've never had a go with them. cheers, ian.

Pm Woodga and get his snaring DVD. It explains everything. Sometimes you get beats as in snaremans pictures, other times you get runs.

The cage traps can be on the margin of the river where the bank meets at a steep angle, and partially covered with drift wood stones etc. I've caught them on prawn shells, kippers, even smokey bacon. Being mustelids, they're naturally nosey and not trap shy. A keeper friend never used owt but rabbit guts, and he caught a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if you caught one using Christmas cake, they're inquisitive b4stards. If you phone Glenn, then you're sure of the very best expert advice. ian.

purse nets, how many meshes down sgould they be?
ianrob replied to daniel8822's topic in Longnetting
How would you lose it. grab the draw cord, grab the rabbit across the small of it's back, and put another net on one handed. You can now open the net and neck it. -

ianrob replied to daniel8822's topic in Longnetting
The way a purse net works is as it says it purses the rabbit, ie traps it in a little bag. If the mesh is large, then the rabbit risks not pursing unless it hits the middle. There is a net with 2 1/4" mesh with no cord or peg that you just drape over the hole, but the name escapes me. All the nets catch rabbits, but to work best the purse net should have 2" mesh for adult rabbits. -
Hi mate, definitely go by what Rolfe says on the cages, he's posted plenty of evidence in the past, that his methods work, as for the wife , some people are just like that, make sure you're there first.

I have a pic which I will try to find today of the result of one nights' cat activity in my garden. I have a feeling, that there will be more conflict between cats and veg growers as the likes of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall encourage an upsurge in self sufficiency.

A pest isn't a pest because of what it is... it's a pest because of where it is. In a basket is fine but I'm not going to sit idly by and allow the local moggy to waste the local goldfinches. I'll leave the snaring advice to those that really know what they're talking about, and they know who they are! I fear the cats will keep their status, so watch out mr Jones. I also feel the remark re the snarers was an if the hat fits comment aimed at me, however as I'm on treatment for paranoia at present, I'll spare you the broken thumb treatment this normally receives. Regards ia

Hi mate, great post. I love snaring too, can I just suggest that in your 3rd, 4th, and 5th, pics the beats are not in a straight line?? worth a mention though it might just be camera angle. It's just one of the points Glenn makes. They could still catch though. Good luck, ian.

Just look at the size of that untensioned noose also...........maybe Old Pat was advising him Don't Rolfe mate, poor Glenn might see this. I honestly thought he was overstating the case.

Trouble is, this is a step backwards. A 5 ft long piece of 2.5mm hightensile fencewire at a cost of 1.7p bent into a hoop with a six strand snare in it, not only does the job, but does it better. It's next to invisible for one, and it's springy for another, and cushions the pull on it. Send for Woodga's video, he's an expert with hoop snares. Good luck ian.

I would, as a layman, feel on shakey ground, if a LACS or cat welfare group pushed a case against you for controlling them, but unless someone pushes the government they don't change things. Cat lovers probably pressured the government into making the cat protection laws. This thing about them being pensioners' or kids' pets is just blackmail. A rabbit or a hamster makes a better house pet. A cat is a large carnivore with very destructive habits towards birds "and my garden". I was informed by a gamekeeper friend, that because of the way they hunt, he'd rather have a fox than a cat prowling hi

Your right Chris, My neighbour stopped feeding birds because of the cat's getting them. They even prey on gamebirds localy. John B is probably right, it's probably a historic thing. I have a small 8m x 5m veg garden where I grow organic veg, and unless I net the whole thing in the spring, the cat's are digging in the rows of seeds and make a hell of a mess as well as the health hazard their feaces poses. I feel that people at the very least should have some claim on the owner for any damage done. You couldn't impose Draconian laws overnight like some quasi dictator, but a plan of changes could

The most interesting thing about this post John, is that it say's so little. Why for example are there no laws restricting them. Why are people allowed to have them annoying other people, with no comeback, when in any sense of the word, they can be pests to others. As I said in another post, I in no way advocate harming them, though can understand why a person might feel like doing so. What other large animal can you allow to wander, and why do you seem to be protecting them. I know the law and do them no harm. I just wish the law would force people

what is wrong with cats. its a pet and not a threat to us. my wife has a cat i've got a working terrier both have their naturel insticts they sleep in the same basket every night, but both go out and kill. If you keep your cat in your own house and garden, then that's fine. Let it wander killing birds and sh1tting in peoples gardens, then it's a pest of the first order. Normally cat owners where I live, have no interest in gardening, surprise. There are doggy bins springing up everywhere nowadays, yet cats are allowed to wander about sh1tting and digging up seedbeds, molesting pigeons,

fair point , but we are supposed to move forward and these contraptions are a step back , ridiculous claims like they set at the correct hight every time is utter bollocks , there is no such correct hight , a snare is set at the correct hight according to conditions like weather and land type , and a pro does not want to carry half a hundred weight of steel around the fields the inventor of the snare was probably a caveman so his contempories were hardly going to critisized his stuff Unfortunately moley you make too much sense. Worse still, it's sense earned from experience. If you wa

Well it's the 4 Dec 08, The article is advising on the new Scottish snaring advice, ian.

I thought that by now things would have changed a little, but as you'll see from most of my posts, I'm a bit of a soft touch, trying to be nice and wanting to see the best in folk. I thought Mr snareman, "Happy birthday by the way Glenn", was being a bit too pessimistic when he talked of the donkey mentality. I thought surely they can see that the man is right. I know he's right so surely BASC, and the Shooting Times team, The gamekeepers society, etc, etc can see that small snares set four fingers high between the beats, belongs in the 1898 version of How to trap and snare. Not a bit of it. Y

,what you should do with these is put them in the three foot mole holes cover them up and forget about them for ever,

TRAPPING (stoats and weasels)
ianrob replied to dogs-n-natives's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Christ does it stink. I once decided to keep the pelt from a white stoat. In the process, I must have upset the glands, my hands were stinking for days. That sweet sickly pungent FFS smell.  -
Yes mate, I usually restrict the size of entrance to the tunnel, and guide them onto the outer edge of the plate where they have most leverage on the trap. You would need to use the Mk 6 version ie the fenn Rabbit trap for mink. The little Mk4 is ideal for stoats though, ian.
