  1. I'd say Ace it's like alot a Peds, people can put 2 and 2 together and come to the conclusion this must not be right because he said this but Joe said that and that can't be right because Jimmy said that Tom said it was something else.
  2. I did a fair bit a bushing for fox when starting out enjoyed it alot but it's a while now it was enjoyable but we had a mix of everything from some going to far away to some teagles going to ground. I suppose it is the spaniel type style hunting I was on about and just wanting to know had anyone hunted the full bred spaniel and how would they be rated Cocker or Springer on fox alone working as a small outfit as to a modest amount of bushing dogs.
  3. I did get a beagle X spaniel puppies here a few months back but he unfortunately got poisoned and I couldn't save him. My only fear for not going for the same cross is with the beagle in the mix would it also travel a bit far ahead. I'm looking for something to stay relatively close I'll will getting 2. Just curious to opinions what would suit my type a bushing small coverts and double ditches that would be hard to get into
  4. Anyone use just a full Cocker or full Springer for bushing fox mostly. I'm well aware of the terrier crosses work great but do the full breeds work just as good.
  5. It's working for me and others mixg nothing wrong with breeding from the best it's the obvious thing to do but each to their own
  6. IMO you do not need a litter every year if so then you have too many terriers that you cannot work week in week out and see what you really and truly have unless you get an awfully lot a digging. People who breed so often either sell or have not been so happy with the last litter
  7. R.H I only breed from the best in my yard I don't have a covahor belt of pups every year so to me it makes sense to breed from my best terrier but if a man feels the need to breed every year he ain't producing to a high standard
  8. Unfortunately that comes with the game it's a game of its and buts what I can't stand is the boys breeding for money and using this excuse """o well his brother is bred the same way so it should prosper " the way I see it breed your best dogs in the yard ya can't do any better than that.
  9. I'm not here to criticize anyone but would you not breed from your best dog I would and I think I respect my other terrier by digging them as often as possible but I will always stand by breeding form the best in my yard. I will never look down on my dogs but no 1 will be put over number 1 not number 2 but as you said once there in the end you could class them all number 1 but when I look at a terrier a particular one probably just takes my fancy maybe the next man would prefer the dog in the next kennel it all comes down to opinion.
  10. I do indeed unstand you R.H and I am positive I come across a one minded dope on here because I can barely understand myself at times if I'm real honest with myself my oldest bitch was bred the way you have stated and I do sure have a favourite but with the little breeding I do I probably only breed from my favourite/best dog and the others will be worked till they can work no more but I wouldn't be breeding so much to give them a look in unless god forbid something happens. I'll just enjoy them and be glad they where put together the right way and do what there bred ta do.
  11. But still R.H if breeding you have too breed from the better worker otherwise it's all blown out the door if we all discard the grafter and just breed from the mediocre it will fade out eventually.
  12. Forgot to add I'm macho man to state such a thing
  13. If he was with his quarry and came out he jacked if he couldn't get to his quarry why didn't he dig on and if he had an upset tummy why did he walk I wouldn't get a day of work for it So many excuse lead to so many failures
  14. A hard dog to keep weight on to be honest he would ate a ?
  15. I've pups to try out a this fella next season. I'm hopeful.
  16. Apart from a young dog braking his leg and is held up, it has been one a the best seasons ive put down for a while. I put a bit more time in myself to get out on my own aswell as digging with my buddies and it paid of. Got one dig about 8 foot under a tree wicked hard ground and I was on my own wit my oldest bitch that dig took over 7 hours and as light was fading I was panicking but a phone call to a friend rescued my arse. Ill stay going till Paddies day unless I meet something thats how ive always done it. Then roll on next season ive 3 pups to start hopefully give these older dogs a well
  17. Do ya want the coordinates? its on the Emerald Isle ??
  18. Reading my own post at time I dont like me?
  19. We should all no that I agree with most of that but if I had a terrier that was of starting age and came out after working its quarry for me its something I just dont like in a terrier. Im 100% sure im not the only one its how we keep are kennels going it works for us may not for someone else. On too many occasions men where more than glad to take terriers of us in the past with the knowledge that they had walked from an early age and none of them came to a good standard . Half decent but not of a high standard if it aint broke why try to fix it.
  20. So this is how I see it in my little brain. Hypothetically speaking if I was to keep 4 out of a litter. One morning I decide to take all young dogs out at 18mth and I have 4 digs of similar dept and time, again like I said Hypothetically speaking . So the first terrier goes in and works his quarry and the dig is perfect one hole I lift him and im very pleased he worked a treat . We move on to the second terrier he goes in and gives it a bit, works away but I have to dig a couple a holes to get him out but he is there in the end so I lift him im still chuffed he stuck to it. The 3rd terrier
  21. Nothing Macho about it RH , its how alot of terriermen do it and with great result and have good standard of terriers to show for it, we all have own ways I for one couldnt live with a walker some can and also get a good outcome from them ? I would feel alot more confident with a young dog that stays too making the grade than one that walks. There is a fierce difference in a young dog thats not ready and a young dog that walks . I wouldnt let a young dog in until i feel he is ready and if on quarry and walks it surely is not something I think terriermen should be so placid about.
  22. There's hiccups and there is walking away from your quarry. Ill stand by what I said I've no place for walkers. I would allow for hiccups for a young dog too make mistakes below ground but once he is there in the finish thats a result and a good start for a young dog, but to walk to me is the worst start possible
  23. I would not hold onto a terrier that walked from its quarry that's just me. If I happened to meet educated stuff and had to dig an extra hole or 2 for a young dog id be alright with that but to walk out and leave its game their I would not be happy.
