cymruguy69 5
I was out for a walk yesterday with a few of the boys. my pup was off the lead with a mates dog a good bull/grey/deerhound cross would take anything before the ban. We were on a mountain side when the older dog lifted a hare and started coursing it my pup was off the lead so naturally she seen the hare to and was off they got to the brow of the mountain top and she started opening up she is only 7 months and this was totally on accident she was probably nakard (as you can imagine a 300 yard up hill course at 7 months). to be honest I was gutted. they dissapeared over the top of the brow so me and my mate made it to the top and I called my pup in. but Bandit thats the older dog was gone eventually he came back no hare "unfortunatley" Do you think my pup will be ok now if I hold her back till the end of august or will opening up be a problem with her?? I'l only be giving her min amount of slips a night anyway on squaters and myxies if theres any about. Get her confidence right up. Happy Hunting Quote Link to post

tote 870
Never seen the point in giving a dog a dropper Plus it's illegal.A dropper never reacts like a normal rabbit. Far better to spend the spring and summer months letting the pup grow, both phsically and mentally working away quietly on it's obedience. Then in August when it's 12 months old it will be ready for entering.Must admit i'd be worried by the fact that it opened up,hopefully if you give it time to forget about it it might be a one off. All the best with it Math. Quote Link to post

Gutted really. Hopefully she'l be ok I'd be devestated if she was to open up regular after the work Iv'e put in. Hope it all turns out well. Happy Hunting Math Quote Link to post

Guest Frank
Apparently, whippets are ment to be prone to this? Frank. Quote Link to post
Guest REDROB
could be just frustration, keep the dog off till older, but dogs can be funny things, in the day my bitch will some times open up, she can see it and she will yap a bit, i put it down to frustration, on the lamp she is as quite as a mouse. Guest wex
I wouldn't beat yourself up mate, it was obviously an accident. A long summer under the dogs belt it should forget all about its singing. Then come winter with plenty of easy wins on rabbits everything should turn out nice again. wex. Quote Link to post
snoopdog 1,256
give the dog a dropper never mind illegal so alot of things . every dog ive had has started with a dropper and it isnt supposed to act like a normal rabbit as you call it its to give the dog some confidance ....and ive never in my life had a dog that has opened up ..i wonder why that is a mate of mine had one open up at ten month old we kept it on the lead for two months giveing a dropper twice a week it never made a sound after that while in pursuite of game .. but as you say everybody does things different ...but it works for me and the lads i run with perhaps we have been doing it wrong all these years ... all the best with your pup mate ...and no matter which method you use i hope it works for you .... :thumbs-up: Quote Link to post
brock 11
what cross is your dog?ive seen it in young dogs when excited, but it depends if it was yapping or barking, like snoop said i would personally go straight out and give it a dropper, get its confidence up,then leave the dog off u untill next season, good luck Quote Link to post
