the steering suddenly went stiff on my pickup anyone owned one of these and had a similar problem and know what caused it

check power steering fluid first mate.

Has belt been squeeking a little might need new power steering belt

Yes I have a noisy belt it started after the steering went still

When the car is cold its noisy for the mile or so

Sounds like you got the problem then. The belt is slipping. As above, needs a new one.
