Good post Hyper , now , im in the same boat as you , airgunner , and im going to do my FAC this year ( i keep telling myself ) . My boss is into his gunns and he recons that the .17 is a great gun for rabbits , and even fox at close range . But ( and not knowing anything about the various types ) i thought that the .22lr was a good rabbit gun . So if i was getting one , it would be for rabbit , and very occasionally fox , which one should it be ? Also whats the range difference between the two ? and what about damage ? im an airgunner so im used to clean head shots , what kind of damage do the two cause ? i dont want to blow em to pieces . Good luck with the FAC Hype .

I'll try my best to explain them to you Buster

The .22LR is the core Rabbit round, it has taken more Rabbits than you could ever shake a stick at. It has the capability with practice, to take Rabbits at around the 100 yard mark and a touch further. If you couple Subsonic ammunition with a Moderator, then the round can be near silent.

If you were to take a fox with it, it would have to be a brain shot at under 50 yards to ensure fair play.

Ammunition tends to be cheap in Subsonic. Really is the bread and butter round for Rabbitting.

The .17HMR is a round which hasn't been around that long, 2002 I think, but it has grown in popularity enormously. It is capable of pushing the range out to 200 yards and more with practice. It is also a very accurate round, with 1/2-1/4" groups achievable with some rifle and ammo combinations. It will easily pin point a Rabbits head with no damage to the rest of the meat. Because in the main the HMR fires a ballistic tipped bullet, it will fragment violently on impact and create a lot of carcass damage. Hence, headshots are the way to go if you want to sell them.

It is capable of taking a Fox at 100 yards if you go for a Brain shot, but as close as you can is better. Ammunition is more expensive, easily double the price of .22LR. Even with a Moderator, the crack is still very noticeable on this rifle.

I hope that clears up a few points, anything I've missed will be pointed out no doubt

Cheers SS , so has anyone got any pics of the impact of a hmr compared to a 22lr ? And going from airgun to FAC , which would be a better choise ? Or would you have one of these and something else ? What kind of price are we looking at for a decent rabbiting set up in 22lr and 17 hmr , Buster

I'll have a look in my Photos for you later buster, heading out just now

If I were to choose one for Rabbits, then I'd have the .22LR, if it was for Rabbits and Winged Vermin, then the HMR.

A CZ in HMR will cost you around £350 now, a set of mounts around £25, the scope? You could pay as much as you want for it, I have an MTC Viper on mine, more than enough for me, I think it was £250 :hmm:

And I suppose you have a Bi-Pod already?
