Hello fellas,

If you had to chose your 1st rifle, what would it be?

It will be for general rabbit & corvid work, but if a charlie presents itself.......well you never know.

Ranges out to probaly no more than 150yds on the ground I shoot over.

Heard a lot about the .17hmr....seem like a good bit of kit, but what are there limitations?

Dont want to take a shot at something with tools that cant do the job.

Dose the hmr fly flatter?, will you not have to adjust as much as say with a .22

Dont realy know much about firearms but i know that the .17hmr flys at a higher velocity than the .22 making it better for longer range shotting aparently.

Get yourself a decent .22 with a decent scope and you wont regret it. You might also want to consider the .22 magnum, but I still prefer the .22

i use both depends upon whot you are going to be doing most off. the .17hmr is very flat 2500fps good out to 150yrds very accurate can take a head shot nearly every time. but it has draw backs noise, wind drift and the cost of rounds. .22 brill with subsonics for lamping and the rounds are very cheap but prone to ricochet.

.22 is the best rifle for rabbits mate .17 is a bit messy and makes more noise alright on a calm day with no wind for long shots though, ive had rabbits with my anschutz carbine out to about 120 yards but that was probably the max

i paid £22 for 500 subs the other day 300 cci and 200 winchesters which aint bad,not sure how much .17 are for 500?

The 17 will do rabbits and crows at 200 yards if you are up to it, but the wind affects it badly. Its not a rifle for fox, but will do the job with a well placed shot.You need to ask yourself what range you will be shooting at mainly, under a 100 yards, go for a .22, over that, get a 17, but forget the 17 if you are selling the coneys. Ammo is around 16 to 18 quid a hundred [remington] and hornady is in very short supply at the moment.

Ive used the 17hmr and the .22 alot since i have been here in the states..

I have killled every type of animal with the .22 ...rabbit, hare, crow, coyote..even some realy big ole critters!..lol. :ph34r:

Best shot i have had with the .22 was 125 yards on a coyote...one shot.

 

The .17hmr is a great little gun..but dont plan to eat anything you shot with it..talk about gut buster!..lol.

I have had jack rabbits at 222 yards (lazer range finder)..if its windy you can forget it though...no recoil, and a nice handy tool for ground squirrels, praire dogs etc..

On larger game (fox, bobcat etc) it is not ideal, unless you get a good head shot on 'em...i have had good heart shots on gray fox and they have run 60+ yards...not nice, hence we dont use it on anything bigger than jack rabbits now..

 

I would go for a .22 magnum...but if your after rabbits and the odd fox, at ranges from 25-100 yards, get the .22lr..any more than that and i would go for the ..2 magnum.
