Scallywag 78
I've got a nine month old terrier and I'd love to give her a go at ratting. I've got a bit of lamping permission but nothing for the terrier and would love to give her a go. Can anyone give me advice on how to get her started? Even better, is anyone willing to let me come and watch what you do and maybe give the pup a go? If you're worried about who the hell I am, Hippychick on here will vouch for me. Sorry if this is out of order but I can't think what else to do! I'm in West Yorkshire but happy to travel. Thanks. Quote Link to post

Chainman 8
Thanks hon - back in your old incarnation I see -I've not been on for a while, been trying to work out how to catch rabbits from under chicken sheds best thing do is let your pup see other terriers workin that will gee her up and get her started try get a place were theres plenty of rats so shes seein a few not just 1 or 2 she will soon click its in a terriers instinct from years of breeding and catching rabbits from under sheds surround the shed with a nice long net and let a couple of ferrets have some fun under there they will soon start bolting all the best with getting your pup started hope it does well for you yis chainy Quote Link to post
Scallywag 78
Thanks for that Chainy. I've been offered a bit of work down south by a friend with a goat shed but I don't think we're ready to go solo just yet!! I don't know anyone with experienced terriers, which is why I've put this thread up. My terriers for bushing for the lurchers mainly but I think she'd enjoy the chance to have a few rats and I know I'd love it! Quote Link to post

Thanks. how is your terrier breed ? did it come from working stock ? only asking because if its in ins blood it will take to it like a duck to water , just needs to watch to start and ragg a few dead 1 s first , dogs can get alot of punishment of the longies so better to start it slow. chb lad 7
i have an expirence pack of border terriers that i use for the rats we go to the local pig farms and use the lamp on the rats have found it to be very successful actully running out of rat to kill. have a 14 month old pup that has been killing them from he was six months is now better than all the older dogs. Scallywag 78
jackard - her dam's a farm dog, apparently decended from the local hunt terrier pack and used for rabbits and rats so I think she'll be up to it - she's a right spitfire and not soft so I think she'll be up for it if I introduce her right, she's just started really working cover and is getting more confident. I hadn't thought of lamping rats chb - as you can tell I'm learning as I go! Quote Link to post
