southernsport 0
Question to you vets. Do all ferrets botl game or is there a bloodline that acually engage the quarry in the ground and get dug to. I know this might sound stupid but I know NOTHING about ferreting. I feed about 20 terriers and know may way around dogs , but these ferrets are new and interesting to me. Thanks for your responds in advance. SSK Quote Link to post
The one 8,586
There just like terriers all differnt styles of work some will only bolt rabbits all day long others will bottle them up in a dead end and need to be dug out, other will kill them after a few times out you should know the working style of your ferret just like a terrier Quote Link to post

SSK Unless you're prepared to go to a private breeder to the tune of around $200 plus all you're going to find is the puppy mill type sold at pet stores... aprox $100 - $150 the next best thing is to get in touch with a good working ferreter who is breeding a litter here and hop on a plane... Your real problem is going to be legality... many places in the states have laws against hunting with ferrets so check your local DNR first.. good luck !! Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Question to you vets. I feed about 20 terriers and know may way around dogs , but these ferrets are new and interesting to me. Thanks for your responds in advance. SSK I'm now down to 10 ferrets, (7 hobs and 3 jills). All my ferrets are bred to engage the rabbit. (Usually does not take that long for the hobs to do the business), and can be digging within a minute of the hob being entered, no need to wait, he'll be on to the next before I get to them. Any that won't do this are of no use to me! Some people like the idea of using a ferret that comes out when it moved all the spooky rabbits that bolt as soon as they sniff a ferret. Some take more moving, and without the will to kill, some will never bolt for a gibber. I use the big killing machines on the high ground where there are shallow warrens, a dig of 1 ft is usual, and I don't need to waste time netting up. On the low ground, I use the jills, still have the same heart for the job, but it's not practical to be digging 4 - 6ft every dig. (Sometimes 20 digs a day) The jills I keep back have the same spirit the hobs have, but are unable to hold a full grown rabbit, and get dragged around and either bolt (which is usual for them), or eventually kill if they don't come out. Either way a warren is cleared clinically. Lot's of folk think digging for ferrets and rabbits is something that is done as a last resort, to some it's just an average day out. I'll send you a few piccies through, all the best. Brimmer Quote Link to post
