Bit of a long one this so please bear with me....and before you all shout I know a JR is not a retriever BUT>>>>>

My lad got one of these about 4 months back from a dog rescue centre, the dog is about a year old, his intention is to turn it into a Gun Dog :whistling::hmm: , things are not going too bad and after being shown how to retrieve a stick by a couple of other dogs there is no stopping him now...BUT he simply is not interested in animal retrieving.

Out all day yesterday and today with him and he runs after the shot pigeon, crows, rabbits and squirrels and finds and marks them but will not retrieve. We walk over, pick them up and end up in a tug of war with him, he will not let go, but as soon as we do he loses interest and just drops them.

He does not have any problem with fur, feathers or blood in his mouth, but we simply cannot get the retrieve idea into his head for them...sticks, no problem and he loves it but don't understand why this will not transfer to the kills!!!!

Any suggestions or ideas how we can train/induce him to retrieve the kills..there must be a way..we have got this close!!!

Cheers

Sounds daft I know but my initial reaction to your post was " tie his favourite stick to a shot pigeon, etc and let him retrieve both. Change it to rabbit, crow, etc as he hopefully keeps retrieving.

Not a scientifically proved method of dog training but maybe worth a shot? Cheers, D.
