matty73 4
regardless of breeding of dog everyone has there opinions of what makes a good allround dog looks aside focusing only on ability. before the ban this would include winter hares and fox but what about nowadays that the main quarry is rabbit what constitutes a good allrounder how would you prioritise attributes of that dog eg; brains, stamina, strike, catchrate, speed, retrieve, nose, drive, temperement ect Quote Link to post

Attack Fell Terrier 864
a good owner , .. wouldnt say theres such thing as a bad dog , just a bad owner HH I don't agree with that. Some dogs just haven't got it no matter how many chances they've been given by a good owner. I do think the owner has a lot to do with it, and 1 mans utter shite could well be another mans pretty decent and then there's different X's for different jobs I suppose. It's hard to say really, all depends what you want the dog for doesn't it. I suppose it comes down to if the dog is doing what you want of it then that's all that matters doesn't it. Not a dog that will just do but a dog that you can work with confidence and be happy with (much) more often than not on your nights out. Quote Link to post
blackpack 70
you do get bad dogs with good owners there is bad in everything. And in my eyes i could have the best dog but the man next to you may think different, if the dog pleases the owner and does what you ask then thats that fxxk what people say Quote Link to post

Meerihunter 7
It's all very well and good talking brains, stamina, strike, catchrate, speed, retrieve, nose, drive, temperement ect but if the dog is not physically robust enough to handle the work you may aswell forget about brains, stamina, strike, catchrate, speed, retrieve, nose, drive, temperement ect because it will lame at home catching nothing. Guest WILF
Breeding and/or plenty (and I mean plenty) of work............a combination of the 2 will make the very best. There are not very many people (myself included) who can show a lurcher as much work as it can handle.......so when folk say they work there dog to the max they have to ask themselves whos maximum?.........theres or the dogs. In 99% of cases it would be the owners maximum and not the dogs Add to the mixture a fairly good standard of training/obedience and the ability to take most of what you point it at and then you may just have a dog that you can justify calling a "good" dog Edited March 14, 2009 by WILF Quote Link to post
