Rabbiting in the snow

When i checked the weather on the met office website yesterday and it said that the snowing would stop and the sun would come out i phoned a mate up for a look out with the dogs.We were only out for two hours but thats enough for me sometimes having to wade through knee deep snow.My legs are still aching and it must be hard for the dogs aswell.

As expected very few rabbits were sat out and the reeds were mostly under snow but the dogs located what they could and after pushing and digging themselves into the white stuff they caught seven rabbits.

It was good to see plenty of rabbits sat just outside their warrens and if we had taken ferrets the bag would have been bigger as the earths are only a foot or so deep.Maybe another day they might not be so lucky but im happy to just go for a walk out and see what the dogs can hunt up.I like watching lurchers hunting in deepish snow,its different and the rabbits can move around in the reeds below making it hard for the dogs to pinpoint them.

A good bag considering the conditions i wish we had some reed beds like that round here, seems like they offer good sport

cracking stuff pointer mate had a couple hours up the dales today and the snow was still stupidly deep but i still managed a dozen if you want a look out sat/sun give me a shout i'l even stick a stinker in my pocket cause the land i do they just buried in snow sets

im new to this so please correct me if im wrong but did nt the pheasent season finish ?

or is there different rules for dogs ? like i said i dont know the laws with dogs so pls dont have a go lol

you might be right i dont know.i dont deliberately go after birds so know nothing about them.

yeah that must be it mate or they died due to the very cold weather or disease.who knows?

im the same frank,i have four dogs,a lurcher,a lurcher pup,a pointer and a terrier,so to justify that amount i feel that i need to be doing something all weekend and lamping rats or rabbits at least two nights a week even if its just a quick hour out after one or two.

the cold weather has even meant that the rats arent coming out as much and i havent taken one all week.its hard keeping a kennel full of dogs active all year.

 

ive just got back from rabbiting this morning but that spot is hard land to catch on at any time of the year and we only managed six,i should have taken the pointer to help out as the deep snow was seriously hindering the dog,the few rabbits that were out were skimming over the hard icy surface without much trouble.i think yesterdays trip might have tired my lurcher aswell.
