Yokel Matt 918
Didn't get off to a good start this morning after a cock up with setting my alarm Ended up leaving the house at 6.30 instead of being at the ground then, my poor car had the tell-tale 'tick..tick...tick' cooling down sounds after receiving a good ragging It was very still at first but a bitter breeze came up and really got under my collar and made my eyes water but, fortunatly, the direction wasn't going to scupper the plans. The ground was very waterlogged and boggy where the cattle had churned it to the point where it wasn't so much the squelching noise that was the problem but more the fact that i kept nearly loosing my boots. The route was neccessary so that the most likely area could be reached from down wind but made the going very slow and noisy. There was little deer sign on the wetter ground as was to be expected but as soon as the going got firmer things started looking a lot more promising. Saw a very young buck on entering a sheltered paddock, although it didn't panic it ambled away and into a copse, as i approached the area where it went in a young doe crept through the same gap and stared at me. I froze. She froze. We stared at each other, me mid step and with her with one forleg in the air, and thats how we remained for what seemed like and hour but could only have been a couple of minutes. I slowley started to bring my rifle from my slinged on my shoulder, she started squeeking, and ambled (all be it very casually) towards a hedgerow without taking her eyes off me no more than 60 yards away. As soon I got the rifle on the sticks she did a hop-skip and was only another one away from the hedge. She stopped to a squeel and was textbook broadside so boom, straight down A nice, plump, young doe is just what i was after, it wasn't the hardest of shots but the few minutes of limbo before could have gone either way so properly stoked with the result. SNAP SHOT 194
nice one mate, i was planning on getting out but the weather is dreadful all this morning and tomorrow is to be dry in the morning so i may get out after all, to bag one for the freezer also, you played it cool there and got her, i know a few lads that panic and try and get the rifle off their shoulder asap and the deer just bolt, instead of staying still and let the deer make the first move......well done again. This doe young and squeeking for her mum so not very streetwise which was a bit more forgiving, for me anyway Hope the weather improves and you get out, i may take my waders next time well done mate, nice photos Cheers RH, Quote Link to post

Yokel Matt 918
Cheers fellas, Remmy: its good when they give you that last chance before they bugger off I missed an opportunity just like this on a nice malform buck at the end of last season because i wasn't ready for a shot similar to that so its good for the confidence. Have to make sure the freezer bags don't leek on this one for my own safety Martin: a nice looking doe too.Any more room in the freezer Local? In the spring,I am going to be building a larder, and, then i will have to keep it fill Just finished the last one mate so good timing, only takes a few mates and family with their hand out hey A decent larder is a good call, i'm thinking about bastardising a fridge but you can't beat a proper job. Better than my shed any day.
