ok... but how would you stop polecats?

A very good question indeed Sid . . .

Any approved trap legally set in a rabbit hole for rabbits would just as easily catch polecats if they passed over the set trap. Any efforts made to reduce the access to prevent it will also prevent rabbits being caught. I don't know if there actually is an answer.

Thanks otc, it made me think aswel. If anyone knows the answer it will be a big help.

Simple answer is mate, dont set kill traps where non target species (especially protected ones) are present. Just like you wouldnt set fox snares where badgers or such like were present.

As Foxy09 says, it is illegal to set spring traps if Polecats are present as they are a protected species.

Polecats are now recorded officially across most of the British counties. Does this mean that rabbit trapping would be 'illegal' just in case a polecat happened to frequent the area??

That's a very good question OTC and one I have raised on PC forums before. As you say there are quite a few Polecats around these days. I assume the onus is on us to establish whether they are in our area? How are we expected to do that? Technically once the Polecat is established over the whole country then all spring trapping for rabbits in burrows will be illegal.

Another example of how vague and unworkable legislation creates a minefield for pest control operatives and trappers.
