Recommended Posts

Was just wondering how people teach thier dogs to soft mouth and not mangle what they catch, like if it catches a rabbit to soft mouth but then a fox to mangle how do you teach them, most appreciated Adam

dogs aint thick mate they know what to kill and what to ritrive although you will sometimes get a dog that just crunches anything and everrything

No teaching involved, dog will either do it or it wont. You can optimise its chance though by doing small things like teaching it to retrieve, not showing it any thing with sharp teeth until its confident on rabbits. Some dogs will never do it though.

to get gaurateed good soft mouth you have to breed of dogs that are soft mouthed simple as , several of the line of dogs i keep are soft they retreive fast the minute the rabbits caut or hare unless knacked , , breeding entering and training ,dont run them doubled up dont run them with strange dogs out side there own kennel mates even then you need to watch ,for jealousy one rabb one dog and not saying anything else on it

Agree with some of Whin's points there some dogs though can be naturally hard mouthed my old fawn bitch even as a pup would crunch bunnies. And she wasn't trained any different from my other dogs. Maybe not in all cases but certainly with my own after a few seasons on charlie they just crunched everything. Good luck!
