jas88 0
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hello, iv been shooting for about 2 years now with a sub 12lb pcp and im thinking of up grading. I shoot rabbits mainly but also go for all the airgun pests and would like to go after foxes as we have chickens on the farm. i do sell the rabbits oon so i think a shotgun will do too much damage to the meat. which should i go for? is rifle ammo more expencive that shotgun shells? Deker 3,491
You have a problem...you want a .22LR for your bunnies but it is unlikely the Police will let you use this on Fox, so you need a .223 as well. Shotgun is OK on fox at close range with the right cartridge but is certainly not my first choice on fox! GUIDE .22LR ammo 5p-10p each 12g Shotgun game cartridges 14p +++++++++++++++++++ each .223 ammo 14p -£1.50 each!! Quote Link to post
jas88 0
ok thanks what sort of ranges can i shoot out to with a .22lr? Quote Link to post
Deker 3,491
ok thanks what sort of ranges can i shoot out to with a .22lr? GENERAL GUIDE!! .22LR sub sonic ammo...60-70yards High velocity ammo 100 yards, the problem with high velocity is that it tends to be less accurate than sub sonic (even at the same range) so, whilst it gives you extra power and theoretically extra range, it sure as hell is not very accurate at 100 yards!! jas88 0
ok thanks, is here any rabbit ammo that will shoot out to 100 yard accuratly? Quote Link to post
Deker 3,491
ok thanks, is here any rabbit ammo that will shoot out to 100 yard accuratly? Not particularly in .22LR! .17HMR in the right weather conditions will give you a group of 3 touching shots at 100 yards! .22WMR will do the same in most weather! .17 Mach 11, I struggle to see any advantage over HMR or WMR or at times even LR, so being polite, no comment!! jas88 0
ok thans for the help Quote Link to post
Sterry 0
Off the topic a bit here but how many people actually use the mach 2 ? Ive never shot it or seen a rifle chambered for it in the shops ! they seem a bit pointless to me, expensive ammo if you can find it and does the same job that a centrefire or .17HMR does. just a fad i think will be quick to die out i thinks, Quote Link to post
Finkley 1
Hello Jas88, Deker is spot on about the 22LR's usual range when using a fixed zero and manual ranging. However, if you practise enough with your chosen ammo and have a mildot or equivalent recticule to allow consistent hold-overs, or better still plot the bullet's path and use come-ups, rabbits can be taken in the head at 100yds pretty consistently. Given the right conditions a bit further too. You will need an accurate method of ranging and for the wind to be relatively consistent, which it almost never is when in excess of 15 knots or inland. Eley subsonic HPs appear to be the most consistent round in the majority of people's 22LR. You WILL need to practise though and shouldn't even attempt the longer shots until proficient on paper at the same range under the same conditions. That said, if ALL your shots are going to be around the 100yard mark, as Deker said, there are better tools but they will all be a lot louder. I hope this helps you. Steve Quote Link to post

And, if you need fox specificaly, not just the odd one , go with the FEO advice, I thinkanyone looking for a centre fire rifl Quote Link to post
