Fieldsporthunter 1,864
im going to make a few nets for myself because its somthing ive never done before. im going to have a go makeing them out of both nylon and hemp. i would like to know what other people consider to be the best nylon and also what ply hemp to use for the job. i personly like 12oz nylon and 3ply hemp, but i have been wondering what spun nylon is like and if there is anything even better out there. as a bricklayer i dont want them to be like everything else i make and fall apart lol (just kidding) but i do want to use the best gear. all advice welcolme ATB Fieldsporthunter Quote Link to post
SwissTony 0
PM John Hubery off here and get some of his spun polyester, you can even have funky coloured nets as he has orange, red and yellow in stock as well as black and the standard green. Quote Link to post
daniel8822 0
well if you are just starting i would go for the nylon or spun nylon because the hemp really holds the knot tight and if you muck up its harder to undo, i started a few weeks ago and i prefer 6oz+ nylon to the others making them and using them ferreting but some of the nylon needs to be double knotted or they will come undone the material i got does not need to be double knotted but the first roll of nylon did have to be double knotted Quote Link to post
SwissTony 0
This is the knot I use on my nets. Thumb goes roughly where the red ring is to hold the string tight while you make the knot. Once you have got the knot correct, pull tight, so that the knot forms under your thumb. Quote Link to post

SwissTony 0
do you use that knot on hemp and nylon. Nylon needs double knotting as it slips easily so I have heard. Hemp should be ok with this as it holds knots very tightly. Quote Link to post

stealthy1 3,964
Spun Nylon for me, hemp is better, but I can't be arsed to hang my nets up when I get back from a trip out. Quote Link to post
SwissTony 0
It can take 1-2 hours depending on which knot, which material and if you have big sausage fingers or not. You will need some 1 inch rings, nylon draw cord and a few 8 inch net needles as well. I have 3 net needles but find myself looking for more, so maybe 4-5 would be better, this means you can load them all up and have a good net making session without having to stop to refill. Stealthy1, have you tried spun poly? Edited January 21, 2009 by SwissTony Quote Link to post

Stealthy1, have you tried spun poly? Yep! used spun poly to make nets, I dont have a lot of time to make many so mostly buy them, but the spun poly is good. Quote Link to post
