pre ban and selling game lamp, drive stubbles feild after feild for roe and hare ,three or more nites a week, weather permiting , nine times out of ten only the saluks lasted the colli crosses done well but only some ,some over heated and well you had to watch them for a wobbly ,always made sure i had sugary water for them ,as they got over heated , ive always kept two types of dogs big saluks and coli types localy there lots of small woods, would put the colli type in and sit along the hedge wait for a roe to break and we would have them ,had one or two colli types who could do the lot but saw alot more fail and were never the same after a few seasons of continous big runs , thats why i got the saluks may years ago , for stamina ,but for general walked up days and maybe just two roe a nite the collies were brill and of course bolting rabbs hunting hares up out of the clap great ,but for big nites only had two colli types last the rest over heated cramped up some nites with hard running and not much breaks inbetween at times ,nowadays need a diffrent type of dog but still need a good allrounder

There's not much call for the "typical all rounder" these days but I would still expect my dog to be versatile enough to mark rabbit holes, work up hare in the daytime or any quarry for that matter and be steady with livestock. retreive well (fur and feather) and be comfortable on the lamp.
