Hi all..just have a question if any one can help me out.

What license/certificate do you need for accquiring a bird, harris hawk, falcon or goshawk etc?

And how do you go about applying for one if you do?

Any help would be great

thank you

Guy :)

Im assuming you're in the UK Guy?.. Well you dont need a licence.. If you're in the USA theres different rules and you'd need to approach the state dept. for their regs and go from there and they're then restricted to the type of birds allowed for a beginner.

Although not a total no no you'll find unless you've a mega close support network and preferably a good mentor a falcon and a Gos are not generally recommended for beginners. Harris hawks, Redtails are usually the way to go. You need to look at the land available to you and the quarry it holds and match up the most suitable bird for the job. If you're starting totally from no experience why dont you put the feelers out for someone nearby you to mentor you and even see if theres a local centre where you can maybe help out and get some more experience.

Keep asking the questions ;)

It'd be a bit like buying a thoroughbred racehorse after having been to a riding school twice lol

Theres an awful lot more to falcons and a lot of land with the appropriate quarry is essential. As ive said though nothing is impossible but support is paramount or you'll simply end up chasing it across potentially mile upon mile of land in pursuit of the bird. There's making the falcon to a hood & lure work to learn too. Plenty of people will have started off with one and im far from in a position to say whether you should or shouldnt get one but im all honesty I feel you'd learn a lot more with at least a season or 2 getting things together and out and about with others and then getting a hawk. But ultimately its your choice..some people are naturally talented with whatever they get and some are a disaster from the word go.. just remember a falcon demands a much higher fitness level and will lose fitness a lot faster than a hh or a redtail.. and as modern as it is telemetry is really quite essential as a lost falcon is rarely in the next field..

Im no expert by a long shot but what Kat has said is bang on..im not to clued up on falcon's but im sure the same principals aply for all BOP ..

IMHO you first need to get your nut into a couple of good book's and read the print of them..then put some feeler's out and try and find a GOOD falconer local to you..and after all that if you manage to find or have access to a good mentor..im sure the last bird on your mind would be a falcon..

You need to stick along the line's of the broadwing's (Harris/Redtail's) :whistling: .. as they have easier training method's and they dont fly a hundred mile away after quarry..also you mention dog's and ferret's aswell mate..dog's and ferret's are a push over compared to BOP ..they obviously still need time and attention but nowhere near the scale of a fit hunting bird..

Cheer's

been hunnting all my life and when i see birds for sale and look that any one can bye one its not good i think there should be some sort of restriction on this
