Just wondering if any firemen on the board got any advice on how to go about joining? not sure if its deffiantly for me but something thats taken my interest and would love to give it ago. Ive had a look online but all i seem to find is companies charging money for courses.

Any info would be great ;)

Every brigade is different in recruitment and work shift patterns. Best thing to do is ask the local station like already suggested. Although, round here recruitment times are short and they dont tell anyone when they are opening the application (i applied up here and it was only open for 6 hours .. my dads a fireman and has been for nearly 30 years and no one new it was on there  When i called into my local station(to get a different opinion than my dads)they couldn't tell me much due to them not being told nothing. Theres a website, search for it on google with all the areas that are currently recruiting, keep checking and as soon as yousee your area get your application in .. you could be waiting upto a year or so before your area starts recruiting though

being serious tho , i have a few mates who are in the fire service, some old time and some retainers they love it they say its a great job to do , like sounder has said go to your local station if its a full time station go when you can , if its a retainer station then try to find out when there drill night is and go and watch them training .

Im just retiring after 31 years and wouldnt reccomend to anyone the job, Im in Durham a small brigade but the ever changing working conditions finally did for me. Health ans Safety , although obviously a good thing to a degree is spoiling the fire service , eg. ( true story) a child in major difficulty in a swollen river , Firemen cant go in after that child now so they were going through all the safety procedures while this child clings to life when an ex marine passer by dives in and retrieves the child while Firemen are still donning safety gear , not what i joined for but thats the way its going and its only a matter of time before a Fireman / Firefighter wont be able to enter a burning building even if theres life to save , jobs not what it was and allows those who really aint got the bottle to do the job to get away with it , so sorry mate if you want advice thats best i can give you, Ted.
