out witted by a dead squirrel

my half hour walk through the forestry plantation to my permission complete i settled down for a malboro moment in the stand of trees just down stream from the silage clamp thats fast becoming the focus for a lot of hungry mouths as the weather gets colder, finishing my smoke i geared up and loaded my magazine (using my head torch this time), and stood on my gun slip to wait for first light!

by half seven colour was starting to seap back into the world and i was wondering if i had time to have another smoke before the pigeons started to arrive when i heard a rattling above my head, thinking a crow or pigeon had arrived with out me seeing it i craned my head round to see if i could locate it, another rattle of branches and ive spotted a bushy tail dissapering round the trunk of the tree to my left, abandoning all hope of stealth on the crunchy twig strune ground i dashed round to where i guessed the squirrel was an looked up to find him about forty feet up, right above my head!

nothing for it but to try for one of those bloody awkward almost leaning over backwards shots!

line up the cross hairs and squeeze the trigger TWANG! the pellet spins off into the half light after hitting an unseen twig thumping down into the leaf litter a few yards away, cycle the action and look for the squirrel again and there he is just a little further along the same branch, looking down at me wondering whats going on!

no mistake this time, i put the crosshairs almost between his front legs and the pellet takes him under the chin slamming him upwards and backwards

to get wedged in the fork of the branch!

and hes still there now as far as i know, stuck fast, white belly upermost unmoveable and unmoved, ten pellets and five sticks later i gave up and went back to my post under the sitty tree to wait for the pigeons!

within twenty minutes a singleton had dropped into the trees infront of me and dropped to the ground, shot in the chest from no more than ten yards away, soon afterwards a party of five became a group of four, the fifth sent crashing to the ground from high in the branches by a well placed neck shot!

then birds that looked comitted to pitching in were flaring off at the last second as they spotted that damn squirrel stuck belly up in the tree!

score of bird were pitching in further down the hedge line, zooming over head to drop in on the silage clamp and whizzing around thre tree under which i stood but none would land near me with that white flag wedged in the tree above me!

after a lul of maybe half an hour a lone pigeon finally pitched in to the trees to my right and after about five minutes finally turned side on and walked into a gap in the twigs, from where i sent it spinning to the ground amongst a cloud of feathers!

the alarm on my mobile telling me it was half nine saw me gathering up my gear and heading for home to walk the hound!

rifle in slip, unloaded magazine in pocket and pigeons in my ruck sack i broke cover and looked back down the field to the silage clamp, there must have been over a hundred pigeons on the overhead power lines and on or around the silage clamp its self with more in the trees further down from where i had been!

at least i know what ill be doing next sunday morning! :D

cheers
