good nights foxing last night with friends

Recommended Posts

went out with two mates last night for some foxing seen around 12 foxes but as it was very still they where abit scared to come into call. my mates vixen call was getting them intrested and the dog fox was calling back so its that time of year now where we will get more luck with that then the rabbit call.

1st place we tried is a good size place 150 to 200 acres with massive open fields and a track road runs round it. allways seen foxes there and one year my mate shot 4 with in 30 mins !

we have been back there over the last couple of weeks and seen foxes there again. 1st field round the left bend in the road so the field is on the left is a cracking place.

big open high view and very safe as it go's down to a ditch in the middle of the field. lamp on and two foxes one at 12 o'clock and one at 3o'clock. pritty far out one around 260 to 280 yards the other around 260.

look through the scope at the one at 12 o'clcok he is just sat there looking at me. this is the 1st time ive used the zeiss conquest scope under the lamp and to say im pleased :D could make him out so clear and what he was doing i only had it on 10 mag to as i find full make you wobbly and field of view is cut short so 10 mag is fine.

my mate gave a little call the fox looked up and started to come in then stopped for abit facing me ;) dont no where the other went but anyway i put the crosshair bang on the front of his chest pulled the tigger and the 50 grain nostler crashed home :D down he went i was very pleased. we went to pick him up it was a dog fox the bullet hit right where i placed it on front of his chest and it come out his back just below his neck.

ranged the jeep from the fox and it was 205 yards so 1st time over 200 yards and im very happy :clapper:

moved on to the next place got out the 4x4 and walked over to a area we have had a number of foxes on over the last year. on a hill looking out round the fields to the left and right which are lovely and safe to as the go up steep so at any angle the shoot is safe. there was alot of sheep in the field last night but where all in a bunch to the one side so as long as foxy came in to the otherside we would be on for a shot.

after about 5 mins of the caller going we scanned the field and behind us ! and sure stuff one had slipped in and come round the back. we let him come round to the side of us in a range of around 100 to 120 yards where he sat at bottom of a bank for a safe shot but there was a dip in front of him to so could see his neck and head. head shot it was then ! :D

our mate nick nailed him with a 22/250 ai which is going at around 3500 fps but from a 69 grain bullet ! lets just say the fox was a mess and a instant kill.

move on to some more fields where we must have seen 5 or 6 other foxes but the wouldnt come into a fair range. apart from one. our mate dave that has the permissions had a shot at one around 120 yards and missed which he was pissed off about. ive been shooting with him lots of times now and seen him take foxes out at over 280 yards at night with his 223 ! so i can see why he was pissed off. but we all miss from time to time.

anyway he is off out saturday so im sure he will get some then. im off ferreting saturday daytime and then over my shoot on monday night to control the foxes.

happy xmas everyone on here best wishes to you and your familys

what call were you using??

i have a 22/250 mate i use factory 50 grain winchester silvertips at the moment and there very accurate in my rifle to be fair. we crono'd them and there in the high 3800fps ! and there pretty consistant at that speed for factory ammo thats good. my mate nick has a 22/250 ai which is 1 in 9 twist so he can push 69 grain ammo ! at 3500 fps.

and dave the guy we shoot with as a tikka t3 tactial in 223 which is spot on accurate.

my and nick both have neiss scopes and dave has the top of the range swarovski scope.

its mad to think how much all ove us shooters spend when you think of it !! we worked it out last night in the back of the 4x4 all our guns, scopes, mods, come to £6900 pound ! thats not including mounts and bases !

Nice one mate , 200 yards in the dark is a good shot :clapper: I bet your head swelled a bit !!!

i was very pleased mate thanks ;) i have had the rifle for around 6 months now i think and havent done much shooting with it really. but ive shot at 4 foxes so fair and had 4 so hopefully i can keep the record up

ive been itching to get out more with it since i have had the new scope and trigger on the rifle.

Nice going Jamie.

Thats a good way on the lamp, and it seems like even further sometimes

Bouncing after that I bet :D

All the best for Christmas guys & gals.

SS

its nice to get one at a good range ss but if i can i like to get them in under 150 yards but last night he wouldnt come because it was pretty still with no wind. so im sure he was uneasy to come closer. im still learning with centrefire really and im lucky that i shoot with the two lads i go with. and the 22/250 is lat shooting so that helps. i no that if i zero around 1 inch high at 100 yards its pretty flat out to around 250 yards with abit of adjustment.

once summer is here again im going to set some targets up and dial in at different ranges. then keep a piece of paper stuck in my bc cap. so i no hoe many clicks at different range. you get that right and the hard part is out the way

i dont like to much mag as i find it shows your movement more and cuts down your field of view.

Lol well done Jamie. I'll see if I've better luck, what call was your mate using? Hand am thinking?

that one came in to a hand call john. but alot of the foxes are paying intrest in the vixen call now it must be getting time for them to mate. could have done with the weather to be abit darker and abit more noise as it was very still that night.
