digging out ferrets

Recommended Posts

in all my years i been ferreting i have never had to dig one out ( prob more luck than any thing)

in the last 3 years been out with then every weekend and the longest i have had to wait is 45 min dont no why this happens but it just has went out last week did 6 warrens and got 8 rabbits out both ferrets i think killed in or could not bolt it but both were out in 30 min.

just wondering is every one giving them a chance to come out or is it that i never give my ferrets rabbit skin or body

had a ferret locator 2 years its still in the box lol

Get the locater going pal, and also the spade. A little hard work reaps great rewards at the end of a day, you'll probably double your bag, (plus the moral side of it) remove the bodies! (why kill for nothing!)

If you don't fancy digging sell me your locater!

(By the way, the longest I have to wait is 4-5 minutes!)

We dig if we can TBH, if we get a mark from the locator on a rabbit, then we try and dig on that mark as soon as possible, as not many rabbits will escape the hold of my ferrets, but when they are dead the stinker is right on to the next, so we generally try to get a mark and if the ferret comes up with blood then we put in a hob and use that to pick up the kill. If you can then dont leave em behind.

Did you win a bet then Will? :D

It's no obsession my friend, just hard and fast reality!

Option 1.

I choose to set 20 purse nets out on the holes, it takes me around 15- 20 mins to do this then, enter one of my ferrets.

After 4-5 mins, nothing is showing, I get a mark on the locater, it shows 2ft, I dig it out, pull 1 rabbit with the ferret engaged, plus 2 more from the back side in a stop end.

I enter the ferret again nothing comes out but the ferret.

The warren is empty and time to pick up nets and move on, this takes me another 15-20 mins. Then backfill 5 mins.

The whole process takes about 60 mins in total.

Option 2.

I choose not to set 20 purse nets on the holes, it takes me no time whatsover to flip the lid of the carry box, and throw in the ferrets.

After 4-5 mins nothing is showing, i get a mark on the locater, it shows 2ft, i dig it out, pull one rabbit with the ferret engaged, plus 2 more from the back side in a stop end.

The warren is empty time to move on. Then backfill 5 mins.

The whole process takes around 10 mins in total.

Dogs are on the top all the time, and catch most of what I bolt (90%)

And if i used jill to try and bolt, only half the rabbits would come out, meaning i'd have to dig anyway to a good jill or pick up a bad one leaving the warren half done.

The act of digging is doing the job correctly, plus not wasting time setting nets for no reason. This is why I almost always have an ok bag.

If i was in a different part of the country with deep digs, and lots of rabbits in the warrens, then i'd have to go about things differently mate. An hour setting nets for one rabbit sounds like hard work for me.

Wish you lived closer young feller, think you'd like the way we do things!

But the thing is my friend, I would never take that long to set 20, maybe a few minutes at the most. I could probably set 50 nets in 15 mins. But you must be out of practise with the nets! haha

I could do a nice size 50-60 holer, in most probably the time you reckoned for 20 holes. But it is all meant to be how WE like so its up to you how you do it. But bolting is the way for me.

Longnet for that one young fellow! I could probably do it in 15 mins! :D You young whipper snappers need the spade to take the wind out of your sails a bit!

You will be a digger one day, you know it! ;)

I know i joke on about your digging B but it works well for you ;) There's no way i would be digging every set up on my land,my average depth is 4ft :o & i,ve got to get through all sorts of obstacle's with it being old quarries but saying that if push came to shove & it meant going home without a fert i would dig the fert out.

I will rarely put a fert down after 2pm so if anything does start to look dodgy i,ve got a good hour or so to sort it out....

If I had 4ft averages then I'd want a few bolters. Average depth for me is around 18", I get the odd bad one, but see this as a challenge.

Most of the ground is easy going to be honest, only occasionally do i get a rough one! Then the fun begins! ;)

It's horses for courses B.I'd be digging like yaself if my digs were 1-3 ft easy going.Your bags of rabbit prove that you work the land to your advantage but i still take my hat off to you for the amount of blading you do ;)
