making miss tarka is a happy bunny

miss tarka has been comming down to my permission most sundays for a while now to walk her dogs and mine, so as she was running late tonight i decided to take my lamp along on the off chance of seeing a bunny or two as it got dark, (i really wish i had taken my camera as well now!!)

we walked round the large grass track field and on into the winter wheat thats been so hard hit by the bunnys, after a couple of laps with out seeing any thing and with the light fading fast and the pups playing silly buggers we decided to head back to the car and get the lamp!, after a few minutes waiting for the light to go compleatly we set off back to the top field of winter wheat!

the bottom half of the field was blank with nothing moving in the rough ground by the hedge but as we turned up the hill i caught a rabbit in the beam making for the hedge line, though it was to far away for a slip it did give us a bit of hope for the dead ground at the top half, after one last shine over the slope i turned the lamp off and we made our way up as quieltly as we could with two (for once well behaved) pups on lead, and a very eager tarka raring to go!

comming over the crest of the hill i shone the lamp across the dead ground onto the opposite slope sending a group of seven or eight rabbits scurrying for the hedge line again to far away for a slip!, so off with the lamp and down into the dip with the wind in our faces and our fingers crossed!

after what seemed an age we came over the top of the next rise in the field and i flicked the lamp on to see two rabbits no more than fifteen yards away and making for the hedge, i never even realised miss T had slipped tarka but she was off down the beam like a rocket turning the rabbits away from us up the hedge line though first one then the other made it safely into the brambles tarkas blood was up and she just hammered straight onto the next group of bunnys further up the field sending rabbits bolting every which way, i switched the lamp off and miss T gave two quiet whistles and tarka was back at heel within half a minute!

as miss T gave her dog a quick once over i shone the lamp over the middle of the field, and there it was a bunny squatting in a rut forty or so yards out, a quick nudge and a flick of the lamp soon had miss T and her dog locked on to the rabbit, with out even the need to speak miss T went left towards the rabbit as i went right to put my self between it and any escape into the hedge, keeping the beam steady on the rabbit as i went!

about ten yards out the rabbits twitched the dogs slipped and their both off and running, first right then left, tarka up on her back legs to make the tight turn as the rabbit jinked, a run of twenty yards and the dogs infront of the rabbit to turn it just before it made the hedge, next thing i know its running right towards me with tarka no more than five feet behind, the beams on the bunny, my eyes are on the dog and my snipper muscle is twitching as i experience for the fisrt time the fear of a sixty pound steam train thundering towards me at god knows how fast!

maybe the rabbit smelt my fear or maybe it was the quiet "OH SH*T" that escaped from me but the bunny turned at the last second tarka turning just inside of it and missing me an miss T by a couple of feet and they both shot off down the field as the rabbit again made for the hedge it must have missed the gap it was aiming for and bounced off to run back into the field with tarka right behind, jink left, jink right, quick turn from the bunny and tarka over shoots it but is soon back on its case as it makes a straight line run for the brambles and safety, my heart is in my mouth as rabbit and dog crash into the hedge one on top of the other!

then thats it nothings happening, all i can see is tarkas back end sticking out of the hedge and im thinking has she, has'nt she?, then after a moment or two tarka backs out and miss T is jumping up and down in delight as her dog trots towards us with the rabbit held firmly in her jaws! :victory:

then all of a sudden were juggling puppies, leads, lamp and rabbit! i neck the bunny and grin ear to ear as miss T hugs her dog and i realise that all the time tarka was running the rabbit little blaine never made a sound!

seeing a dog run live quarry for the first time was amazing, thank you miss T as always your welcome back any time! :notworthy::notworthy:

cheers
