ferreting dog

It should come naturally to a dog, and should not have to be trained to do it.

Just bolting rabbits without nets will encourage it though, especially a young dog.

Reading the dog is something you have to learn on each dog though, some will tear the holes out from one extreme to others will simply stop and linger for a second or so at the other extreme.

Each dog is different.

those that take a dog ferreting, how do you encourage/train it to mark holes?
Never encourage a dog nor praise a dog for marking otherwise they will false mark

What kind of dog have you got davieboy? They all have different ways of marking, i've seen some just stand over the holes looking at them. It's not too important how they do it, as long as you know somethings at home!

I never encourage her i just let her do her own thing and if she wont leave or lifts a front paw thats counted as a mark .And i dont want her sitting down at a burrow im quite happy to let her wander about the burrow as she knows where the action underground is .

Don't stop it before it's started!

If it goes down this route i know it can be annoying when they disturb some rabbits and they don't see them bolt for the commotion they are causing, let it get marking a while first before you check the dog, then when it's a little more experienced at it, then start to physically move the dog back telling it to stay back.

Just a case of not putting it off before it's started.

With most dogs, marking just comes to them the more you take them out, they soon learn that if they mark they will get a few runs, my shepherd marks really well, cant run worth a s**t though, he stands sideways on to occupied warres staring at the enterances wagging his tail. :)
