At the momment i have 7 ferrets, 3 of which seem to be making the grade, 2 are the kids pets, and 2 that i think ill be going to pet homes (have to see how they come on), I also have a Border that is keen as mustard, and is doing a good job of bushing and holding while the rabbit is in the net if i'm busy with another.

So far a good team i think, but on my latest permision i have a large warren in the middle of a field, about 40yrds to the nearest cover,it's a bank of old mud and rocks about 2.5 meters flat across at the top, and about 60 meters long, so i'm looking for a dog that can catch the "runners" Borders too slow, Question is what dog or cross do you think is ideal for catching these rabbits? i go out in all weathers, and would also like to have a go on the lamp at some stage.

 

I've been thinking about a whippet as i don't want anything too big, due to space at home, but is there any other crosses that would suit my needs and maybe be a little more hardy in all weathers or is the whippet hardy enough?

Best off getting this put in the lurchers section, you will get more response mate.

 

i am no kind of expert (just bringing on my first two lurchers) but from the sound of it a 3/4 whippet 1/4 collie would suit you.

From what you have said about the large warren, i think a 50 yrd longnet would be the best option.

But obviously, you are wanting to go a step further with the running dogs as well!

A pure whippet will do the job, and do it well. If you need a little more durability then think about a cross, maybee collie type, but don't be afraid to just get a bigger collie/ grey, they will not take up much more space! a dog is a dog, big or small!

I agree a dog is a dog, but a sofa is only so big, and if the missus can't get on it cause of the dogs i get it in the ear

 

But joking aside, i don't think i need anything much bigger for the job in hand, Although I'm willing to listen to advice, I'm not looking to "move up" to anything bigger than rabbits, so all suggestions welcome.
