Merle problems

Recommended Posts

A friend has a 5 month old lurcher pup. One of the litter was both blind and deaf and his pup has strange eyes that swell up and then go down. It seems to be worse on sunny days. I suspect that it's merle genes which causes this. It's well known that you will get problems if you mate two merles together, but can there also be problems if there are merles way back in the pup's ancestry?

Has anybody experienced problems like this?

Were both the parents of the litter merles then?

I recently had a accident mating my beardie/whippet lined a blue merle border there were 8 pups 1 white blind and deaf but the other 7 were 100% fit and healthy and i have had no bad feedback with any problems on any sight or hearing difficulty's but i consider myself lucky with them and won't be repeating after what i have read about merle/merle breedings :)

all white breeds have a tendency to have bad eyes and ears, but they can crop up any where , a mate bred a litter of whippets a while back with a pure white pup that was deaf, theres a wee snap of him, rest of litter had been call out to feed, lucky enough a single auld boy took him on and they were inseperable
