Ferreting with Stop nets

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys

Have aquired myself 2 , 25mtr stop nets. Just would like some help on using them whilst ferreting. I know with Longnets you surround the hole warren, but what should i do if the net is not long enough?

I figured many ppl use stop nets and some tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated

you will learn with experiance the best place to put them.

to start with look at the warren you are about to do if there is another warren near by or bramble bushes or any refuge you think the rabbit may use then that is the side of the warren you want to put your net. you may be able to curve the net partialy around the warren wich can help.

its all about thinking like the rabbit and getting the net between where you think he will go for.

happy pegging [bANNED TEXT] :)

nets like you have sound ideal for criss crossing the larger warrens if you circle the whole warren with a larger longnet, the shorter ones then stop those rabbits that dont bolt for the open and merely hop from hole to hole

Or alternative, i dont know if you have hedges where you are, but here in England i often ferret hedgerows and if a rabbit evades the pursenets on a hedge they will run along the hedge line rather than break for the open, smaller longnets/stop nets can then be set through or butt up to the hedge at 90 degree angles and are quiet effective that way

If you want some fast action sport and aren't bothered about numbers then just set the stop nets in the most likely places and either shoot at or use a dog to try and account for those that dont run at the net,

you may find with 2 x 25metre nets you can circle (or nearly circle and stand yourself in the gap) most small warrens and those under bramble etc...

Have fun and experiment, i have two short stopnets as well as my 100yarder, i use the shorter ones as i described for hedges or when circling a large warren to creat pocket/secments within the netted area to stop hole hopping

Cheers guys :good:

Im taking them out today and think they will come in handy. It was suggested to me to make the 25 yrd nets so i could use them as stop nets or combined as a longnet.

I still have more netting here ready to make another 25 yrd net. So i will have 75 yrds of net in total. I guess its just down to experimenting and working out the best ways,

I will get some pics up of my day

Thanks for the help

You can buy fibreglass poles [bANNED TEXT] about £3.50 each but you can buy dowelling at b+q a lot cheaper i like three foot six poles allowing six inches in the ground and still carrying the net at three foot you can have it lower to allow more bagging but then the rabbits might jump over it
