LONG RANGE PELLETS

I don't really trust gamo after watching there ad 180lb hog shot with a raptor pellet must have been about 10 yards away 1600 feet per second the hog was probably half dead anyway

That ad was under a lot of criticism for being unsporting and encouraging dangerous behaviour. I mean, who'd be retarded enough to shoot a hog with a .177?! That's just cruel. I wouldn't shoot a hog with my .22!

what do you think of the gamo rockets?

I haven't used them. Though most people who have, dont seem to like their accuracy. However, reviews are mixed. Some people seem to be getting great groups with them. But Gamo seems to be enveloped in controversy all the time these days. First the Hog ad, then the claim that the Rockets have improved penetration AND shock transmission. I mean those two ends of the spectrum right? Better Penetration = Less shock transmitted!

Maybe if the hollow point and bb were to seperate on impact, the hollow point would have to be made of very soft lead with a wide mouth.

Thats only possible if the hollow point and bb were to seperate on impact.

I was hoping you'd say that.

Well, an online review showed just that. The bb did separate on impact. But even with that, a regular pellet penetrated much farther, at the same time imparting more energy, being heavier than the Rockets.

An interesting find was that the tiny bb's attached to the end of these pellets were of such good quality that they can make better products in itself! Wonder when Gamo would wake up to that.

As far as I see, Gamo has always been interested in impressing the pants off of new shooters. The first time shooter usually looks for the highest velocity figures! I have a Gamo Hunter that I bought as part of this philosophy when I was 15! lol. Not that its a bad gun. It a great gun. Its been 11 years or so now and its still shooting well. But its not quite up there when it comes to the other big names - at times.

Gamo still advertises rifles that are capable of supersonic velocities, over and above that they advertise pellets that can go supersonic on any rifle. A new shooter would imagine a combination of the two and end up with a combo that's supposed to do 1600fps! The question is, what will they hit with all that velocity?

Yes I have read that only boat tale pellets (pile driver) will stabalize at those speeds unless you fire a standard pellet 2.5 times the speed of sound. My local gunshop refuses to stock anything with the gamo name on it I went in with my weihrauch in a case and he said if thats a gamo ill break it over your head. Thanks for the info I will not be ordering any rockets now i will stick to standard pellets from now on.

Do you know of any .177 12-15 grain pellets just for a bit of short range fun.

Guys...speeds and power are getting a bit daft here, if you want to go to silly levels then throw away the air rifle and get a .22LR. The guns are cheaper, the ammo is cheaper and FAR more readily availably, you don't have to worry about running out of gas after 5-10 shots, they are more accurate and you can get cartridges from around 30ft lb to 205ft lb in every variety you can think of...and as you need a FAC for both...well .......

Lol!! Buy a pack of rockets and leave it at his door just to see him blow his top..!

I don't know of any in that bracket. But the H&N Silver Point (11.8gr) and H&N Rabbit Magnum (16.85gr) are quite good. Though I'm not sure how they'd perform in a 12ft/lb even at short ranges. Try the Crosman Premiers in 10.5gr. A friend of mine swears by them.

Valid argument. But Air rifles, I feel are more fun. Also, for hunting, its the challenge of stalking to get within range that makes it more interesting. And backyard plinking for hours on end. But the biggest attraction is how quiet it is. I bet my neighbours would appreciate that.

Who'd be silly enough to plink with an LR in their backyard?! But they do have their advantages as you rightly said.

Mohamed where could I purchase these rabbit magnums? I have searched everywhere.

Try drapers-airguns.co.uk. They have a good collection and if not they should be able to source it for you.

Most of the time I import from UK, I do it with Blackpool Air Rifles (www.airgunbuyer.com) I dont know whether they stock this particular pellet. But their service is good. Give them a try too.

The main thing is that I think these pellets are no longer under production. But stocks should be there with these guys.

Anytime mate. While you're at it, check out the Norica Killer pellets. They look interesting. Though I'm pretty sure the accuracy wont be anything to write home about, it may be fun for plinking.

And I completely forgot this one. Try targetsports.co.uk too. Lots of people have nice things to say about them..

I was referring to the daft speeds and therefore power mentioned in part above.

Speeds of 800-900-1600ft sec are not back yard plinking tools, a .22LR with shorts or caps or even shot shell can be UNDER 30ft lb and the noise from a sub sonic .22LR with a decent moderator is quieter than most PCP!!! The noisiest part of a standard 40g HP Soft lead .22LR at 1050 ft sec is a very satisfying thud upon arrival.
