RAMCAM 4
Anyone used pile driver pellets 21 grain .177 on game 12ftp. What range would you you get using pile driver pellets? would they have the impact of a .22 pellets being heavier weight but smaller diameter?. my rifle is a hw100t 11.75 ftp with bisley mags. Grim Reaper 1
Anyone used pile driver pellets 21 grain .177 on game 12ftp. Yes, i have tried them, but certainly not on game, as i personally wouldn't shoot them at anything that breathes - you will see why in a moment. What range would you you get using pile driver pellets? Certainly not as much as you would think - you could probably get maybe 15 yards out of them, while maintaining accuracy that is. Piledrivers have the aerodynamics of a house brick in legal limit air rifles - that is why you shouldn't use them for hunting in a leagl limit air rifle bud. They come into their own at FAC power levels - that is really what they were originally developed for, you will find. would they have the impact of a .22 pellets being heavier weight but smaller diameter?. my rifle is a hw100t 11.75 ftp with bisley mags. Technically, yes they would (or should have) simillar energy at impact to a 22, but the range would be so much more shorter that, in my mind, this would be an unsporting shot? Although, i must point out again, that due to the aerodynamics of them in legal limit air rifles, they really shouldn't be used for prey or quarry. I hope this is of help bud? All the best, Grim. There is no simple answer, let me try and cover it quickly and as simply as possible. First off I do not know this pellet but it is VERY heavy for a .177. Actually it's heavy for a .22 as well. In an air rifle the GUN provides the power, conventionally up to 12ft lb, whatever pellet you put in will effect this power to a small extent as pellet weight, shape, BC all have an effect on the efficiency of the pellet to carry energy!! In a cartridge rifle/shotgun the cartridge itself provides the power not the gun, and there can be some VERY wide differences in power in the same rifle. A Pile Driver pellet in .177 will NOT hit like a .22!! It may well hit harder than a conventional .177 as it is heavier, but from the same rifle it will also be going a lot slower, at times this can be an advantage on some quarry as the pellet will stay in and impart all its energy rather than passing through, but remember it is still a .177, the pellet track through the quarry will therefore never be as wide as a .22 which in theory can therefore do more quarry damage, even though it may not penetrate as far. Like I said a Quick response, we could go on forever like this with pluses and minuses for different pellets, but the reality is the difference in a 12ft lb gun is very small, swings and roundabouts!
