Hey all,

times of the year are no good to me as the weather is different over here, i guess i am interested in the times of year you are in season for bunnies(eg summer, spring, winter, autumn)

Hey all,

so what is classed as your season?

historically in the British Isle's it was any month with an R in it,

ferreting is mainly autumn and winter, i ferret from late august until early March, rabbits breed all year round but mostly in the height of summer, and as the undergrowth grows it makes ferreting hard work as well, plus your ferrets are either in season or have kits so most people pack up about now and start again after the crops are harvested

around late august early september when the young rabbits are of a decent size until they start breeding again the next spring (march (ish)) however spring arrives in different parts of the UK at different times and spring arrives a lot earlier in the warm south of england compared to the colder climate in the north of england/scotland and parts of wales

However some people do ferret all year around, especially for pest control at the landowners request

Dis am i right to beleive that in Oz you ferret during the spring and summer as the rabbits dont breed then because it is too dry?? when do your season's start and finish?

basically we ferret the after harvest, all the way up to when the crop is very small, once its cropped we dont do it

i have noticed the rabbits breed or seem to pair up when the crop is sowed, we dont ferret then but lately ive been going out during summer(this year summer has come really late, not till last month did we get it, normally dec is quite hot) and have had a few does with unborns

its not put me off ferreting for a few months, i also seem to be getting a lot of 1/2 and 3/4 growns

Officially i dont know of a season in Oz, things are done different over here perhaps, maybe its just the circle of hunters i hunt with, but the only guy i know who sticks to a season over here is bullcat from this site

maybe he can enlighten us?? :good:

Most people I talk to who i buy nets off tell me Winter is the 'Season' for ferreting. Mainly because they sell all there nets before winter as everyone is getting ready. I have not seen rabbit kittens for a while now, so i would say the season for ferreting is probably starting now.

Personally i ferret all yr round. Rabbits breed like wild fire so its practically impossible to ruin game for the future, Just my Opinion....

the last 2 times ive been out ive ended up with does with unborns, one the dog caught(his first rabbit) and the second one my jill bolted

im thinking either this weird weather weve had this year with summer taking ages to come on(the last month) has made em breed more this year, or they are just breeding all year round
