jamie g 17
could anyone give me any imfo on a 17hmr like best gun range on [foxes] ammo ect ive got 500 quid to spend any imfo would be much appreciated THANKS THE POACHER right start with the rifle. most hmr's weather its a annie,cz,sako, savage with group around the same the only difference is price ! now depends if you want a wood stock or plastic, what barrel lenght, and so on cz are great value for money. and a very well built and accurate. i myself have the annie 1517 hmr. i find the build better, better tigger and nicer bolt to cock to. its super accurate 1/4 inch groups at 100 yards some days depending on weather. but on a average day just under 1/2 inch which is ideal. ammo all hmr ammo is made in same factory so people say it should shoot the same ! but i still think some are better then others. i find hornady and federal ammo groupd tighter in mine then remmington ammo. i dont use 20 grain ammo and i dont use the hp ammo i only use the 17 grain bt ammo. foxes i go for head shot keep it under 100 yards and only when your use to the rifle. if its a new rifle for you get use to it and limit the shot even more till your grouping well at 100 yards. i go for head shots side ways on and aim for the spot between the ear and eye. i myslef would go for a secondhand set up mate you will get a good deal for £500 pound for sure. what i would say is go to your local gunshop and try some different models and see which one suites you when you lift it and try it in the shoulder. some people like the heavy barrel varmint some like the standard barrel. some like the longer barrel and some like the 16 inch barrel. accuracy will be no different really. it will depend on if you want to shoot from a 4x4 then the shorter will be more compact to use. if you want to go foxing alot then i would go for a centrefire. but to pop the odd fox off when out rabbitng the hmr is fine Edited October 30, 2008 by jamie g Quote Link to post

jamie g 17
cheers lads. all hmr's are pretty much the same accuracy wise. its down to taste and price and i think your be happy with what ever make you get. as a rabbiting tool i find it very good and if you shoot on land where there is the odd fox about when your out shooting you can deal with him to as long as you no the rifle well and the fox is in side a 100 yard range. the rifle has the power to kill over that but i wouldnt because the round is so small if you pull the shot abit you could hit him in the skull. you just have to be sure with the shot as the fox will leg it and its not fair on him to go off injuried and you will feel pissed off yourself for doing that. i have done that with a 22lr once so no what it is like. he went down i carried on lamping for rabbits only to hear him get up and scurry to a bush i felt really guilty about it and never used a 22lr on one again. inless i could be use of getting a sideways shot between the eye and ear. that way it will go into his brain with no bone in the way to deflect the shot. cyclonebri1 8
Without riding the post, I am looking for a .17 rimfire. I was in the local gunshop this week, he said he had a fresh batch of CZ stuff coming in that day. Pretty much made a choice but the wood was very plain for walnut. I think the guy realised I was a bit of a gun tart, cos he said do you fancy a real flash jobby? He had had a misdelivery of a Savage Mk11 .17hmr, laminated thumbhole stock, all stainless and threaded. What a beautifull weapon, but at £490, probably about £150 more than I wanted to pay, and not a choice I was familiar with. I was undecided so left it, but when searching the net this rifle has some rave reviews and I'm dithering. Anyone have/had one, or got an opinion? Might help both of us, Cheers fellas Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
I'm going to be boring and agree with Jamie, great post I think I'd go for the CZ over the Savage, just look for one with wood you like better. Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
yes look at some of the cz around different shops some have nice walnut stocks with a nice markings. i have a annie and its a dear rifle but the stocks are crap. inless you have the thumbhole one. then its nice. i had the thumbhole but sold it as im lefthanded. so i got cash and some ammo and a standard ambi stock for the swap. the savage rifles with thumbhole are laminate there very nice but i have heard storys that rifle isnt very well built. and the mag release catch is crap. it works fine but looks cheap and nasty. if you are paying £490 mate then go fore the annie or sako. but if you want a bargain goet a nice cz and the extra money for good scope Quote Link to post
