Rolfe 2
Anyone ever come across these things before........they keep falling through sunken light fittings of an old rectory. The black bit would appear to be the arse end as they crawl along from the other end. They are about 10 mm long and are opaque to maggoty type colour. I wondered if they may be some sort of boring beetle type larve........but open to offers. I have never seen anything like it before anyway......it is a five pence piece in the rather poor quality picture by the way.

Tis TM 8
They look like bot fly larvae to me... normally found in horse dung - the eggs gets laid on horses legs, horse licks em off, eggs hatch in stomach and attach to the lining of the tum, then, if they aren't wormed with the appropriate wormer, the mature lavae release themselves from the stomach wall and get passed out in the droppings. They then get into the soil, or stay in the dung, where they finish maturing and out hatches the fly...... I think........ Might have it wrong somewhere along the line ......... But then I just read that they are coming from from light fittings!!! http://www.karengriffith.com/horse_health/botfly.html
dogs-n-natives 1,182
Could you put a pic of them upside-down? Or, could you tell me if they have legs underneath? If so, are the legs protected under the 'shield'?
comanche 3,298
Rolfe,I came across some of them last year. They came out of an extractor- fan vent in a bathroom.. I'd done a wasp's nest in the roof a week or so before .It was a boxed in loft conversion jobby but I reckon that the jasper nest was pretty close to the site where these chaps were appearing .I remember at the time thinking that they might be some sort of symbient tenant fly lava from the debis layers of the wasp's nest but then forgot about em. So ,yes .I'd like to know too! Edited October 31, 2008 by comanche

If so, are the legs protected under the 'shield'? Yes, they had tiny legs under a shield type layer.......almost invisible they were.

dogs-n-natives 1,182
Im not 100% about these exact ones, but abroad ive seen moth larva(caterpillar) that live in ants nests and they wander about inside the nest and eat the larva (grubs), the shield protects them from the ants bites. There may well be types over here that specialise in wasp nests. Edited October 31, 2008 by dogs-n-natives

comanche 3,298
Hello Fidgety .Thanks for that Easy in hind-sight but I remember thinking there was a sort of resemblence to rat tails -drone-fly larva.Cept of course Rat-tails tend to appear in buckets of water not light fittings. Slightly coincidentally I did a nest first thing this morning and guess what the customer had been finding on her window- sill? Once again thanks Edited November 1, 2008 by comanche
