Air rifle power

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone just wanted your views on this i have an air rifle which is running at 7.9ft/lbs (bsa comet).

Now i know that is underpowered, but i have taken 7 rabbits with it and except for one it has been a clean kill (the other one was my fault). If i limit my range to 30 yards, (thats the maximum distance it doesnt group like a shotgun :tongue2: ) ans shoot for the head every time fo you think i can still use it as an effective hunting rifle ?

Thanks

Hi Young London Hunter,

So long as you don't shoot beyond both your own, and the rifle's capabilities, you will find that it will be a valid hunting tool, even if it is running a bit underpower - i beleive you only require 4 - 5 ft/ilb to make a kill on a rabbit? If i am wrong on this mark, someone will point out the error of my ways - but that is what i understand it to be.

If you can consistantly group your shots inside the area of a ten pence piece, then what ever is the maximum distance you can do this will be the effective range of your air rifle. Put this together with your own capability, and you will see just how effective a tool it can be.

I hope this helps to re-assure you bud? ;)

All the best,

Grim.

thanks yer i thought it was a 50p coin ?

and yer i think my fieldcraft is up to scratch as i used to be obsessed by bird watching and learnt a lot from people there :)

At the ranges of which you speak of, shots inside a 10pence piece are, i think, the suitable target area/shot groupings to strive for.

Shots inside a 50 pence piece area would be ok for the closer type of target work - close range ratting etc, but would be, IMHO, a tad large for 30 yards+?

The 10 pence piece standard is one i have set myself, and i feel it is a sensible target area for the 30+ yard mark.

Regards,

Grim.

i do the same with the ten pence piece, but i shoot for a five pence piece at about 25 yards.

Liam, my old mucker,

With what you will be receiving very soon  , as well as hitting a 5 pence piece, you will also be able to cut a hair off a gnat's knacker at 25 yards!! lol :laugh::laugh:

All the best bud,

Grim.
