Two Dogs Which Changed My Life Forever.

I haven’t been hunting for that long but it all started when I was 14 and a Friend of my father’s offered me to go out lamping for rabbits on some permission of his. A few weeks before we actually went he told me about it and he was waiting for the perfect night to go and I couldn’t wait to go.

I never been hunting with lurchers before and never really heard about it and didn’t know whether it was effective or not. The only dogs I ever heard of that was used for hunting were spaniels and greyhounds I always had spaniels all my life and knew they were used for retrieving shot game.

Let’s cut to the chase well finally it was the perfect night for lamping and there was plenty of wind a little bit of rain and plenty of cloud cover you couldn’t see the Moon. My father’s friend lived quite a while away so we met half way to the permission so it was an even distance for us to travel. Well we finally met up and he got the lurcher out of the van and it was a cracker never seen one before I most probably had but I didn’t realise what they were. This lurcher was a Collie Cross grey hound I think that’s the cross if I remember correctly and it was a gorgeous dog one of the nicest Lurchers I have ever seen to this day. So we jumped in the car and off we went. The whole drive I couldn’t wait to get to the permission to get started and get a few bunnies I didn’t really know what to expect.

Well we finally got there and my blood was rushing through my veins waiting to see what in store for me. I couldn’t wait to get started we walked a hundred yards down a path onto the permission I could hear the sheep bleating in the fields around us and the mist moistening my face and watching every step of the lurcher as he knew what he was about to do. We hopped a fence straight into a field. Within minutes we had the first rabbit, When I saw Darren slip the dog I watched it run up the side of the beam of the lamp and it was over in seconds the rabbit had no chance and I thought to myself ‘I want to do this for the rest of my life’ the chase lasted about 15 seconds I never realised that dogs where so fast and were able to catch rabbits on open ground so easy.

We went on throughout the night catching rabbit after rabbit and each catch was as amazing as the first watching the lurcher run sleekly down the side of the beam and just gracefully picking the rabbit up gently and not harming it one little bit. This dog had his job down to a T he was amazing. Before I knew it 2 hours was over in no time for me I just didn’t want the night to end I will never ever forget that night for the rest of my life. We left the permission with 16 rabbits and a smile on my face ear to ear. Once we dropped Darren and his lurcher back to the car and gutted the rabbits I started the nagging to my father all the way home about getting me my first lurcher. The first thing the next morning my father was on the phone to Darren telling him about my nagging and asked him if he could get me a lurcher. In a week or so he found me one, I was landed and couldn’t wait to see it so my father and Darren arranged a meeting to pick her up. We drove down and Darren fetched her. When I first saw her I was in love straight away knowing it would be mine. She had a brilliant temperament and was only three, all trained up by Darren himself. He bragged about her and he said if he didn’t have jock he would have her and for Darren to say this I knew she was a good dog.

Well I had her there and then and couldn’t wait to get her on the field. So I nagged and nagged for ages for my father to take me out somewhere decent with her to give her some game as you can see I am an annoying kid, only joking. I just really wanted to see her in action and get the buzz as I did last time. Well after all the nagging he finally phoned Darren up and asked him about helping me out getting some game for my bitch. We finally got a phone call and we were aloud onto the permission he took us on before. So we waited for a good night to come just the same as last time and off we went. I was even more excited than the last time I went as I knew what an amazing sight I was about to whiteness, but with my dog this time my pride and joy. After the longest drive of my life we were there. I had the dog on the slip lead and had my old man on the lamp we walked down the path going to the permission it was the longest walk of my life it seemed because I couldn’t wait to get there. Finally we hopped the gated and we were here in the dogs domain where she belonged we scanned the field quickly. There it was... 30 yards in front of us, a rabbit! I slipped the dog and just as jock done she ran down the side of the beam and the chase was on. I watched every little movement of the dog as she pursued the rabbit. I watched her jaws open and gracefully just pick the rabbit up as if she done it a million times before, the rabbit not even making a noise or a movement she brought it back to me with a wagging tale knowing she done what she had to do so I done my part of the job and finished the rabbit off. Soon as I seen her pick the rabbit up I had a smile for ear to ear yet again, this feeling was more amazing than when I first saw jock catch a rabbit. I thought to myself as she brought the rabbit back this dog will change my life forever and to this day me and her still enjoy our hunting with the gun when she retrieves or just me her and a lamp. This dog means the world to me and couldn’t cope with life without her she is my best friend and she always will be. I will never forget her. I will always pursue the humble rabbit as my favourite game and will always work my Lurcher. I hope to have many more breath taking experiences with Molly each more exciting than the last.

Good hunting,

Adam and Molly.

Jock is the blue murle coloured one. This is a picture of the dog taken by a member of the hunting life called ‘Socks’ it’s the same dog that made me love Working with dogs its name is Jock and the proud owner is Darren Chick.

Molly she is a bull grey x Collie grey she is a fantastic dog and works really well. I hope this will make those who don’t hunt with Lurchers wish to try because I think it’s the most amazing and rewarding way to hunt. Thanks for listening to my article and the experience which has changed my life forever.

Thanks guys glad you liked it but no where as near as much as i loved the real thing, there isnt much quarry for me near here but i just got permission on a gold corse so molly is going to be worked really hard now love this dog to bit bets thing in the world to me.

To chalk warren,Yes darren and jock are brilliant hunters both know exactly what he is doing i was going to breed molly with jock this year but she wouldnt stand darren wanted a pup out of here i took her ferreting the other day it was the first time she had a really good chance in a while and she was off marking warrens all day there was a lot of mixy though but every warren she marked sure enough one ran out she had a good few runs but it is ubundant with warrens and they were back in holes by the time they where out but she did catch one which just started mixy could see and run so it had half a chance to get down a hole i was walking with her and just to watch her run and pick another one up just re lit that candel up in me to get her out alot more that was the main reason i tryed so hard for this golf corse. So hope to have plenty more thank for reading lads hope everyone else goes to plan for me :) and drop some more comments cheers Adam
