parkstone 24
I worked one many MANY years ago. it came off Belle Vue after being warned off as a fighter had no stamina at all but after months of walking/running/conditioning it made up into a handy little bitch but she could never be trusted 100% as she was not opposed to picking up the odd JRT if the mood took her that way. JollyPoacher 3
Great Pic. Thanks for the reply, I was thinking of getting a second lurcher to keep my beddy whip company and add a bit more height and speed to my string. After all the reading ive done on the threads it strikes me that a lot of folk on here are still working big bunnies, with dogs that have been crossed up the ying-yang to try to produce fast dogs with brains and stamina. So I was thinking there are lots of greyhounds looking for new homes and that they should all be fairly fast (even if not champion standard) and that they cant all be stupid and some might be stayers. If anyone else has had a go at training them up after the track, I would be keen to hear from you, both success stories and the horror stories. Where any aspects paticularly difficult (recall, stock breaking)?? So what are the arguments for lurchers instead of longdogs? All opinions welcome. Quote Link to post

sandymere 8,263
Like all dogs there are good and bad. I've trained a few post racing, mainly as pets but some for a little sport as well. Small bitches seemed to do well on the lamp but you need patience to train/socialise from scratch. The stamina is part breeding ie don't get a sprinter, part conditioning ie road work and part fallacy ie most 3/4 bred lurchers haven't much more stamina than a pure bred any way. But spend a little time with the right animal and you can get a good dog. Quote Link to post
