Advice about Genetics

Recommended Posts

I remember reading an article on lurcher breeding saying that if you bred two half collie greyounds to each other then you would get a mixed litter. ie some pure grey, some pure collie and some half collie grey. I was wondering what would happen if you put a half cross to a three quarter cross? would it be a level litter?

I know that the best way to get 3/8 -5/8 is to breed a 3/4 collie x 1/4 greyhound to a full grehound but was wondering about the half cross to the three quarter cross.

Also, what about puting a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie to another 3/4 grey 1/4 collie? would that give you a level litter?

i know it's not an exiting subject but i am quite intrested. My current lurcher has been dressed and i was thinking about getting another 3/4 cross in the near future. I would like to breed a litter in a few years and am just messing around with ideas in my head.

Also, any advice on what to cross a 3/4 cross with other than a collie. I thought perhaps a whippet or maybee even a bitza lurcher if its a strong worker.

i mostly lamp rabbits but try for the occasional hare.

Any advise would be appreciated.

hello mate .. i think you are asking a very complicated question here one that can not be easyly answered.

the main reason being that most litters produce in excess of 6 pups , and most working dog litters are produced to better or produce more workers for the owner of the bitch, with extras for sale to cover costs .

so most people will experiment with litters looking for there perfect pup and sell the rest or cull the crap and run on the saplings they favor.

it might be better for you to do the same and breed from dogs you know and like and pick pups that have there look or feel about them.

there is a famouse scientist that did the first and most respected study of genetics using peas . i cant remember his name but the info will be on the net.

i know how it feels to plan a litter so much that you feel nobody can answer you questions . but the only way to find out is to do it your self.

the only way i know of of getting even litters of a hybred is to line breed . with tight in bredding and slow progres . after a few generations there will be even litters and a type will form . but again this is hard with working dogs as ability over looks is bought to the fore.

with line breeding the most important thing to bare in mind is that any or all the good parts you lock in to the genetic strain will also have there negative parts locked in to. ie poor feet behavural problems etc.

line breeding can also lead to impotance and loss of fertility in bitches . so out crossing bust be added to improve genetic fields. the most comon way is to fold in a strain that is similar to your own but of totaly diferant line . this would be very easy with collie hybreds .

all the best matt
