The best small working dog?

Firstly let me be clear I have virtually no idea which dog would be the best for me and hope those more experienced can give me some advice.

 

I have a small garden, hence I need a small dog that can flush out and if possible retrieve small vermin for me, rabbits, pigeon etc. I don't see me digging or sending it down any holes just simply using my 12 bore.

 

Oh I grew up around Jack Russells and think they're great but I know they can be difficult to control and the last thing I want is for me to spend most of my day out chasing it across field and dale.

 

So does anyone have any suggestions?

If its just to flush for the gun then a spaniel, a small garden doesn't matter as long as the dog gets plenty of exercise......

So do I mate but the kids make room for the terriers when it gets cold, body warmth i call it

 

Why don't you get a Lamb, that way it can keep the grass short at the same time as fetching dead stuff

Thanks for all the replies, I think a cocker might be the best bet, simply that bit smaller.
