Guest hyperion
id arranged to go pigeon shooting yesterday afternoon with my shooting buddy as a friend of ours wanted some birds and wants to be shown how to prep and cook them! i got away from work an hour early at four and we headed down the farm and out to a little spot under a big oak where there is a flight line into some conniffers, we had just got to the old tree and dropped our bags when i spotted a fox on the farm track about a hundred and fifty yards away just sitting there watching us, ive had a bit of success squeeking foxes before, bringing them in to within sixty or seventy yards but ive never had the hardwear to deal with them, this time i had my mates shotgun under my arm! i slipped a couple of cartridges into the gun closed it and put my hand across my mouth and gave it a squeek, as soon as it heard the noise the fox stood up and took a couple of steps forward, i took a breath and started to squeek again, two quick and then a long drawn out squeek and she pricked up her ears and came running in heading to the right of the tree so that i lost sight of her behind the trunk putting the gun up i started to edge around the tree to my right, squeeking all the time and there she was about twenty yards away and still comming, i stopped to take a breath and she stopped head forward ears up half crouched and almost cat like, squeek squeek squeeeeeek and shes moving again, comming straight towards me at a run, i lost sight of her again behind some tall weeds and then all of a sudden shes right on top of me, running head on at me no more than ten yards now, gun goes to my shoulder and i put the bead on her muzzle and pull the trigger! BANG!! the weeds to either side of her twitch as the pellets cut through them but most of the charge take the fox full in the face and down she goes to lie on her side less than eight yards away when i pace it out! breaking the gun and slipping the spent shell into my pocket i realised i was shaking like a leaf!, my legs were like jelly so i passed the gun to james and sat down at the base of the big oak and simply looked at my first ever fox! we finished with five pigeons a jay and my fox that i think is a cub of the year as its a small vixen with quite clean teeth and a very good looking coat! shes wrapped in bin bags in the freezer now waiting to be mounted as soon as ive got some money for it! cheers a very happy hyperion Edited September 23, 2008 by hyperion Quote Link to post

I always have the wrong gun at the wrong time John i know the feeling, before now ive only ever had my air gun or no gun at all! i think she was a cub of the year is the only reason she fell for my squeak to be honest, but im going to have another go this weekend as the farm where we shoot is rife with them at the mo we counted seven just round the yard on our last trip out after rats!, the land hasnt been shot over for more than a year now! cheers Quote Link to post
