DevonHunter 0
My grandad is fed up with his winchester subsonic's jamming in his .22 brno. Ive been looking for other alternative .22 ammunition, and i see Eley's are regarded as very good and accurate but are these just for target shooting or can they give rabbits and foxes a good smack? Any help shall be greatly appreciated. (he cant get to grips with the whole modern technology with computers etc. hence getting the grandson to do the research ) Edited August 29, 2008 by DevonHunter Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
Good for rabbits yes, though they reportedly don't have the killing power that the Winchester subsonics do. The Eleys, in general, do seem to be more accurate than the Winchesters. Eleys will also ruin crows and magpies days, mind you these MUST be on the ground and with a safe backstop They will kill a fox yes, but give you very very little leeway for error in shot placement. I only take brain shots on foxes with my .22lr and I pick my shots, any I'm not 100% sure of I let go for a day I have the .223 with me. You should also make sure your FAC is cleared for fox. A lot of it is down to the shooter, how capable he is with his rifle, and the conditions, good rifle rest. I know I can hit a fox in the head at yards, I don't go past that range. Other people will differ. I can hit a fox brain sized target at 100+ yards BUT shooting a paper target is very very different from being out hunting in the field. In the field you don't usually have the time to steady up as much, you may not have the best rifle rest, you may be out of breath etc. I wouldn't take a body shot on a fox with a .22lr sub, that's me though. Oh right okay, he's just fed up with the jamming, do you know of any other ammunition which has the stopping power of the winchesters and accuracy of the eleys? Or am i asking for too much? I guess its always one or the other? Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
I don't but other replies may Over where I am it'll be either Winnie or Eley subs the majority of the time. High Velocity .22lr rounds will have more power but generally less accurate and louder than subs. I never found a HV round I liked for my rifles, all rifles shoot different though. Quote Link to post
DevonHunter 0
Okay thanks anyway Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
hi have you made sure you keep the chamber clean as the wax off the bullets some time add to the jamming up. i use eley subs and i find they have plenty of stopping power. i have shot rabbits out to 100 yards with them and its dropped them no trouble at all. if your going to shoot fox keep the range down and go for head shot only. make sure he is side on to between the eye and ear try to avoid a head on shot as the is a fair bit of skull at the front and the shot is harder to place Quote Link to post
IanB 0
There both around 100ft/lb eley and winchester subs..Both good rounds, but I've went over to eley's now for same reason as your grandad.. Quote Link to post
